Rolled out the Matsushita's, and back in with the National Gold Line/Russian 6n23p's.
Problem is... problem is that this chain was supposed to be for detail, but I turned it into an enjoyable all-rounder, more or less. There was nothing to really set it above the SMSL SH-6 chain, for example, and that's no good. That's a lot of money to basically double-up on one type of sound, with slight differences.
So... today I bite the bullet and roll the super-revealing Russian's back in. Let everything else in the chain breathe and show me just what sort of detail can be extracted without a smooth blanket of creamy Matsushita draped over everything.
Sounds good so far... I won't be able to listen to anything even remotely crap through it anymore... but that's not the point.
The point is ultimate clarity and detail for this chain.

EDIT: Wow okay I'm impressed. This works. I love the sandpaper textures of walls of guitar. I forgot that these aren't bright... just utterly ruthlessly transparent... with a touch of magnification to the mids. Zoom x2.

Hey samr33,

Can you please share your opinion on how the balanced headphone output of the Esoteric compares to the Auris? I have had the same Esoteric for 2 years now, but always used in a speaker setup, and just received my headphones today (Hifiman HE1000SE). I am wondering if I am missing something particularly important using the headphone amp of the Esoteric, vs an external amp.

Hi there, the headphone amp in Esoteric cannot compare to the Auris, as an amp Auris is better in every way, consider that their price is pretty close (given that I have replaced the stock tubes to NOS tubes) but one is a pure headphone amp and the other one is a multi function streaming dac, I would consider that normal, but to be honest the headphone amp in Esoteric is not bad, when you pair it with the right headphone (for example Focal utopia 2022) it really shines.

Going analogue today

Nice choice. I like the DAC/Amp combo of Questyle as well. I have tried cam 400i, 600i, and 12 mater. Now I am using cma 12 mater to drive my ZMF Vc. I must say it is kinda rare to see someone else using Questyle DAC/AMP combo on Head-Fi

I've posted this before, but I want someone that feels that their system isn't as nice as some of the other set ups not too feel badly about it. If you like the sound and have fun with it, then that's all that matters. This is my modest gear and I have the best time with it. Chin up and carry on.

Is that RCA switcher you have pretty good quality? Does it degrade the audio at all?
