Finally I received the brown leather case today. Only took a month to arrive. :-O

Overall very happy with it. At first when I saw the pictures I want sure about the wedge design by the volume dial. It reality it actually works very well.

The colour also looks great with the Titanium of the M5s. The quality is pretty good on most of the case...

There are clearly visible machining marks on the bottom of the case (see picture). Pretty disappointed about that. Looks really bad/cheap but I'll try to get over it

@Shanling is this normal for your cases or is it a manufacturing defect? I purchased from PAPRI Audio Store on AliExpress. I understand they are an official dealer?

That sucks, you could always get some Leather Colourant, search for all in one leather dye, just wipe over with a sponge. You can even change the whole case to a colour of your choice with that stuff

@Shanling

Do the filters affect balanced headphones? If so, which one would bring out treble the most?

any timescale for the western release of the firmware update or mobile phone app to use your phone to control the M5S? Fiios released one, Hiby has released one, where is SHANLINGs? Its a really useful feature.

Released Chinese beta of app serves pretty much only as way to register into Chinese music streaming app running on M5s, control features are not ready at this time.

Unfortunately on these brown leather cases, these marks around connectors are common in whole first run we got. This type of leather is beautiful and great to touch, but way too easy to get scratched during manufacturing.

You can apply for replacement, but most likely you will get case with similar marks around connectors.
Black and red cases are using different leather and show no such marks. So if you would accept different color, you can ask your seller to exchange color.

It was PAPRI Audio Store on AliExpress.

They are apparently an official Shanling retailer...

First time I’ve ordered from AliExpress... pretty disappointed!

We have official dealers selling on Aliexpress, of course choosing to buy from China instead of your local distributor brings some problems and risks.

You can read more about it and our official warranty policy on our website: http://en.shanling.com/article/98

Yes, filters are effecting also balanced output.

Due to working of digital filters, choosing some with fast/sharp roll-off will give you little bit more extension in high frequencies.

Here is little explanation of effect of digital filters directly from website of AKM.

hello,
i got the m5s this morning - a visually very appealing device. No comment to the sound yet - the burn-in started only 10 hours ago.

Now i am just trying to play three DSD albums in iso format on the sd card, f.e. [Kraftwerk - Minimum Maximum (GSA version-German Version-German Version) (SACD ISO) (2.0 and 5.1 channel) (2005) Double Disc]. After navigating through the folder view to the corresponding track and pressing <Play> the error message "Not Supported - Playback Failed" appears. The other two iso albums are played correctly, but the track title is not updated when switching (>>) to the next track.
No problems with the same sd card using the iBasso DX120.
I installed the current firmware 2.1 - perhaps this release is (still) in the beta stage.

@Shanling
The filters from the above list are implemented in the AK4490 and AK4495 respectively - the newer AK4493 of the m5s got the Low Dispersion Short Delay Filter additionally.
In the settings of the IBasso DX120 both - filters and sound types - can be configured independently.
Why are the sound types missing on the m5s - in my understanding, the associated functionality should already be incorporated in the DAC chipset ?

You can try to send us this problematic file for testing.

Quoting from web of AKM AK4493EQ:

A harmonic sound filter was newly added to the existing five filters found in our previous generation device. So, six different digital filter types are selectable according to the user’s audio and system preferences.

Filter list above shows 6 filters that are on AK4493EQ, while older generation only had 5, according to AKM website.

All our engineers are on vacation, so can't check it 100% with them, but to my understanding "Sound types" are just names AKM gave to these 6 digital filters. I guess it looks better than strictly technical names of filters.

@Shanling i have a question regarding the LO.
Is the Max volume only applied to LO when the 3.5mm port set to LO, or both to the Balanced port too?

Line out settings affects both ports.

Yes, you can link M5s with your phone and play any sound from your phone through M5s. Spotify, tidal, youtube, M5s will simply act as BT receiver.

Why not just download the full users manual? It goes through all the settings.

You can definitely tell the difference between balanced and single ended. Single ended is excellent by the way. I don't feel like I am missing out on any details or the full sound quality of the player. It is just that in balanced it adds that bit of extra. Stage, imaging, depth, detail, separation w better bass and treble extension. It is what a good balanced implementation should sound like.

I use single ended if I am just listening to music and want to conserve on some battery. Very enjoyable. I listen to balanced if I want to listen to something critically or for review. Make a difference for well recorded albums.
