Shanling M1s - Compact Portable Player (Discontinued)

The bluetooth is not any better, and is essentially unusable as you say.
@Shanling Will you imporove the bluetooth?
If you are at the latest firmware of M1s, that's the best performance it offers.

Be sure to have display facing away from your body, as it's where antenna is located.

This is a great device, almost perfect for my use case. The only caveat is the 20k limit.

It looks even more absurd now that I've installed custom fw on my 4 year old Hiby r3 pro saber to increase the library file limit so that it can comfortably accommodate 34k tracks.

Yeah I love mine but its BT range does suck which is a first for any DAP i have owned even going back to my AK Jr. Literally can be led face down on the sun lounger and it can be 5 feet from me cutting out and then i need to put it directly BELOW the sun lounger for it to be fine but most of the time its fine - hopefully when my Meze Albas arrive soon I can wear those in the sun as I hate using my Bathys when its sunny (not that summer here in the UK has been that great so far)

Wish there was a Bluetooth receiver DAC from Shanling.. just to compete with things like BTR7, etc.

A proper hardware based EQ (PEQ)/DSP, no need for memory card, focus on longer battery/modern codecs and wireless charging.

Would be a top level device 🤌

I have a question please!

I wanted to use the M1S as a bluetooth reciever for the iBasso DC Elite. Will the M1S output bluetooth via usb c? Thanks.
M1s can be used as USB transport while in Bluetooth receiver mode.

Can't comment on the iBasso compatibility.

Since the last firmware update I have a new bug.
When using bluetooth, sometimes at the end of a song within an album, it just does not start playing the next song. Pressing play also does not work, and generally the player will need to be shutdown and restarted before anything will be able to be played again.

I have been testing with various bluetooth earbuds (TWS) to see which are most reliable.
I get frequent Bluetooth 'Interference' with some, leading to some other consequences, detailed below. I tested by moving out of range and back in again.

Sony WF-C700N (Bluetooth 5.2, SBC, AAC)
Generally these perform the best, after interference they recover correctly. Cut-outs are the least of any buds tested, but do occur.

Earfun Free Pro 3 (Bluetooth 5.3, AptX Apaptive)
A huge amount of cut-outs occur in general use. After the range test recovery is very poor, often leading to music being out of sync between left & right ears. Sometimes the music stops in one ear. Just pausing the music can cause one ear to stop playing. Turning bluetooth off & on is required to recover. The buds run as AptX on the M1S.

Cambridge Audio Melomania M100 (Bluetooth 5.3, AptX Adaptive)
Very similar results to the Earfun, except they often just disconnect instead of recovering.

Jabra Elite 3 (Bluetooth 5.2, AptX)
Recover better that the Earfun, but occasionally get out of sync. But a pause & play is all that is required to recover.

It should be noted, that all of these earbuds perform flawlessly with an Android phone. Also tested with a Shanling M2S, which also performs about 95% better with bluetooth.
I used the Earfun buds for an hour while using the lawnmower with my old M2S player, and it worked fine.
I tried the same with the M2S, device in same location, screen facing out. It constantly cut out and was unusable. Even with the Sony buds it was not very good.
As I like to use Bluetooth earbuds, I have concluded that the M1S is going to be unusable for me now, only the Sony buds work to any level of acceptability.

It is very disapointing as I really liked the M2S, so that I thought I would upgrade to M1S. I have had the M1S for 4 months now, so no chance of a return. I like the interface and using the device, but it does not perform.

@Shanling is there any hope of getting the bluetooth fixed? Or should I start looking for an alternative DAP?

I have detected another occasional but very annoying problem (in firmware version 2.6):

When I have the equalizer active, sometimes, at the beginning of the track the sound changes (not volume) as if it moved to another equalization, this lasts several seconds then it returns to normal (from the selected equalization), I have detected it both with headphones and with the line output with both low gain and high gain.

I have tested it by repeating the track and it almost never repeats itself on the same track, that is, it is random.

I also agree with the Bluetooth problems in this version of the Firmware.

Spotify is what I've been using lately, even though Neil Young said it sounded like a pixelated movie because it's not hi rez, ha ha. But I can steam it so not a deal breaker, and it sounds great to me.
Think Neil's just butt hurt from Joe Rogan. ,:)

Really would like more info on m1s 😉
Pixelated movie? Ya that's about right. But quality is variable on Tidal.

Introducing Shanling M1s

M1 was our first truly compact portable player, released back in 2016. Later came the Q1, with its retro-styled design, so different from our classic players. And the line was topped by the M5s, the best sounding and most feature-rich MTouch player.

Shanling M1s takes the best aspects of these models and combines them into one, making for an ideal mid-sized MTouch portable player.

Updated MTouch system gets all the extra features from the M5s, including Wi-Fi connection and streaming capabilities, it even adapts a similar UI design. But this time powered by a more advanced Ingenic X2000 platform, opening space for future software development.

Audio section also follows in the steps of M5s, opting for a more complex circuit, with a high-performance ESS ES9038Q2M DAC, in-house developed FPGA technology and dedicated headphone amplifiers. Allowing for a high-powered balanced 4.4mm output, alongside the standard 3.5mm.

All of it packed into a Q1-sized body, based around 2.8-inch touch screen, nicely balancing compact size with usability. And featuring our latest body design, inspired by M3X and M8 Android players, with a new addition of front-facing playback buttons.

When all put together, M1s comes as our most featured and best sounding MTouch player, while staying true to its heritage of compact design

I bought shanling m1s, I hooked up a dongle, the tempotec sonata bhd pro, suddenly a great distorted noise came out, I unplugged the dongle, still making the noise, after this the sound was awful, no good at all, distorted in the upper frequencies.. I reinstalled firmware and it has mostly fixed it but now there is no bass, and at volume upper treble will distort. Is this a capacitor maybe? I just bought it. Can't afford to keep buying these things. I can change capacitors, simple things like that.

Are you please talking about sound from M1s or from the dongle?

It's possible that the M1s was damaged, please contact your seller for warranty on this unit.
