Shanling M1s - Compact Portable Player (Discontinued)

As I understand it, this player does not have a clean digit output via the usb c connector, since when connecting my dongles such as e1da 9038d, fiby fc6, jCALLY AP90, the processing is still there and it feels if you try to turn on the equalizer. The same situation applies to the hiby r2 player of the first generation, there is also a change in the equalizer and MSEB on the connected dongles. These players do not have direct digit output without processing, most likely this problem is due to the simplicity of the solutions used in operating systems. Hence the conclusion that m1s and r2 are not very good as sources for pluggable external dongles.

I wrote earlier that the usb c port on my player failed, but it's not true. After removing the cover and measuring the voltage at the terminals of the port on the side of the board, I realized that there is a voltage and it is transmitted through the cord from the charging station. Most likely, the power controllers on the board itself are out of order. I gave the already disassembled player to an electronics repair company for repair, but they confirmed my speculation and the specialists gave the player back because they could not order these components for repair. The instructions say that the player should be charged with a current of no more than 2A, but I noticed it too late and charged it only three times from a fast charging phone, which has a maximum current of 2.5 A. So be careful with charging the player. It will be impossible to repair the player from local repair companies. At the same time, I am not the only one with such a problem in my country, since I already know two people with such a problem with this player.

If you leave EQ systems off, it will be clean digital output.

All decent chargers are regulating their output voltage and reduce it to the 5v/2a for Shanling players. We use mix of fast chargers with our players and never faced any issue.

Maybe you can give us at least a rough timeframe on when this new player (assuming it will be the m2 ultra) might be announced?

We will post about upcoming products in their time.

Since Shanling isn't disclosing anything about this new myster MTouch DAP lets do a little speculating.

So we know that the next DAP let's call it the M2 Ultra since the pictures shows the same sharp edges as the M5 Ultra it does not really look like the M1S. The screen in the picture looks to be about 4.1" give or take. Since the M5 Ultra is $589 and $229 for the M1S. I am going to guess a price around $349 to $399 (roughly 1/2 way between the two). We can bet it will have the Ingenix X2000 SOC like the other two. Hopefully battery life will be at least 15 hours since it has a larger body than the M1S and should be able to accomodate a good sized battery. Likely not as powerful as the M5 Ultra but at least slightly more power than the M1S. Same MTouch OS as the other two so we know what that should look light and its features. Basically a middle child DAP between the baby M1S and the big brother M5 Ultra.

If my speculations are close it looks like it will hit a nice sweet spot between the other two and a great option for me for sure. Hopefully we won't have to wait to long for information about it and it released in time for Black Friday so I can compare it to the other DAP's I am looking at.

After a recent software update, new problems have emerged with the playback of music files. After a few songs after turning on playback, the player crashes at the beginning of a song. The file frequency is then not displayed. It also happens that in bluetooth mode the file progress bar moves forward, but no sound can be heard. In both cases, I have to reset the player. This happens every few files. Completely random. It can happen up to three times in an hour. After the reset, the same file plays normally. It is not the fault of the SD card either, as I tested on several. The same thing happens on all of them. After a year of unequal struggle, I am fed up with this "premium" device. Maybe the components are good, but if there is no sensible software, the hardware is suitable for a flower stand. And not even that, because it is too small. This is rather the last product from shanling, because for more than a year the company can't embrace software. If I wanted a shoddy player, I would buy some Ruizu and not resent anyone, being aware that what price such equipment. And here the price does not go hand in hand with quality.

Is the digital output bit perfect?

When using as transport for l&p w4, I noticed that bitrate shown in m1s tidal app doesn't match the bit rate shown on w4 screen. This is an issue I'm seeing for tidal hires flac files.

Mqa tidal tracks don't seem to be handled properly by m1s either as they should be showing up as 88.2 or 96 bitrate always on w4 since w4 is not mqa decoder but they usually show up as 44.1.

I just received my Shanling M1s and it is not possible to play DSD or MQA correctly, all files of this type are played with noise, pops, skips or sound cuts. I've already tried all three DSD playback modes and none of them work. At this moment I have firmware 2.6.

Is it possible to correct this?

Is there any way to go back one screen with a swipe rather than having to hit the top left arrow all the time ?

This!

Apart from this issue, DSD files cut off first 2 sec, no gapless on certain formats and no EQ on hi-res (btw it DOES take EQ up to 24/48!), I am very happy with my M1S. I use it as it is meant to be...a DAP not a DAC. And it's awesome.

I think I'll return this crap, the DSD and MQA playback problem really bothers me, if Shanling offers the feature it should at least do it well there are other more basic devices that do it better. Also the battery drain in standby and shutdown is rare it should not happen.

Is this happening with the same files each time? Can you send them to us for testing?

It's bit-perfect output for local playback.

For Tidal, that's not something we can confirm, especially when it comes to MQA files, as they are currently bit strangely run through the Tidal API.

We don't see such issues reported by other users.

If you can send us PM or email at info@shanling.com, we can check on this with you further.

This happens on a different file each time. Completely random. A while ago I triggered this problem to take pictures. This time it shows the frequency. But whether the play button is pressed or not, the file stands at zero. And, of course, no sound. There are no specific files on which this happens. Pressing the next or back key changes the file.It still stands at zero, however. Only restarting the device helps. But in a few songs the problem will repeat.

Can you downgrade to previous software version and see if it would fix it?

It would help us to identify if it's truly caused by software or if there isn't some hardware issue on your unit.

It happened on previous versions of the software, too. But not so often. Sometimes once every 2-3 hours. So a downgrade might help a little. But the problem will still be there. I tried formatting the sd card in different file systems. It didn't help either. If it's actually a hardware problem, I won't do anything about it anymore. It's been 12 months since I bought it, and I bought the device on Amazon. And there I think the 12 month warranty was.
