Well, it is something that I have never paid any attention to before, at least. It's not disrupting the listening experience -- it's nigh inaudible, but it still is there, as opposed to how Kleer is marketed as noise-free.

I think it is part of the design. I asked my friend, who also has the 180 phones, to reproduce the sound on his machine, and he said he could hear it as well.

I've been reading this thread for some time and it was very helpful to narrow down mine options to RS 160 and 170.
 
I'm thinking of combining RS 160 and 170 while using 160 base unit. I was wondering will I lost any HDR 170 functionality if I connect it to RS 160 base unit?
 
Also, regarding ergonomics and design of 160 and 170, are they exactly the same or the differ. If so what are the differences?

Acoustically, the HDR 160 and HDR 170 are quite similar. However, when you pair a HDR 170 to the TX 160 transmitter, you won't be able to enjoy the Dynamic Bass and Surround Sound functions. Also, the TX 160 will only offer an effective range of 20m (line of sight) compared to 80m for the TX 170.

Thank you for your answer, I really appreciate you taking your time to do that. In order to make final decision I wanted to ask you is there any significant difference between 160 and 170 in their phisical design expecially considering their confort. If I use for example 160 and than change to 170 would my ears notice any difference in confort?

Er - no they don't.

In Europe they use the 863 to 865 MHz band.

In the USA they use the 926MHz band.

NB: The European version is illegal in the USA and the USA version is illegal in Europe.
 
 
I am confused about the response above and I humbly need clarification. Does anyone know if I buy any of these RS160, S170 or RS180  from Germany, can I use it in Singapore ??
Retail for these are very expensive and they have a Office and Service Center in SIngapore.

You seem familar with the RS160, RS170 & RS180. I am thinking of getting one of these.
 
I am presently using HDR45 which is RF. It is open dynamic as I understand.
 
I am looking for one that does not disturb my partner who sleeps next to me while I watch TV programmes. I do not listen to HiFi but just TV programmes, movies, music concerts and  documentaries.
I isten at rather low levels and at night for 4 to 5 hours at a stretch.
 
I need your advice on the above 3 systems.
 
RS170 is close and I understad hot with the leatherette fabric and sound bounces inside. What I understand is it a choice for my needs and requirments
 
RS180 is Open dynamic and most people say because of it , it is comfortable especially with Velor fabric and sound does not bounce inside. In view that I am presently using HDR45 without much problem in terms of disturbing my sleeping partner, will the RS180 be louder than than HDR45 is I liste at similar level.
 
Relatively it is cheaper to buy from Germany from Amazon.de but I am yet to check the shipment charges.
 
Do you think thoseSennheisers  for the German market   with their signals which are different then USA, be also different then SIngapore such that if I buy from Germany I will not be able to use them ??

All of your comments have really helped me. I can say that as of yesterday I'm proud owner of RS160 (and HDR160 are on their way for my wife). It is very short time to really say something competent but I'm very satisfied overall. And I cannot compare them with some other headphones because these are my first headphones that are worth mentioning. I bought them mainly for listening music and TV when our two 5 month old twins are sleeping, and from what I see they will serve this purpose perfectly. And portable transmitter is only a bonus when I want to listen music on the move. Also changing sources with this transmitter is so much easier than with transmitters of 170 or 180. If anybody has any question I will be happy to try to answer them, but be warned I'm complete amateur when A/V technology is concerned
 
I have couple of questions though. User manual says that we should keep transmitter and source at least 20 cm far apart. How to deal with situation when I go outside and I want to listen music from my phone. My plan was to put them into same pocket. Would that decrease SQ or have some other negative implications? Secondly, user manual says that source has to be off before we connect transmitter. Is it an absolute must because it can be very annoying to constantly turn my computer off and on when I want to listen something from it. Would it be enough that at the moment of connecting transmitter I don't have anything actually playing on the computer.

Were you referring to RS 145? Correct me if I'm wrong 

 
If you're listening at 'rather low levels', the sound leakage should not be an issue. The RS 180 comes with an open circumaural design and you'd probably experience sound leakage at higher levels. Otherwise, the closed RS 170 would be a better option.
 
Our RS 160/170/180 utilise KLEER's digital wireless transmission, operating at 2.4~2.48GHz. We do not offer different product variants for these products. So, whether you buy them in Germany, US or Singapore, you should still be able to use them wherever you are.

I am referring to Sennheiser model HDR45 which which works on RF (Radio Frequency) It was boughtin 2004 and it is still working and so before it breaks down I am preparing to buy one to replace it.
 
I have tried RS170 and though it is close and isolate sound and will not disturb my spouse sleeping beside me on bed there is the discomfort of closed dynamic and on top of it the cup is made of fine leatherette fabric but is will be wram and uncortable oevr a period of 4 to 5 hours of listening in the night where our temperature is between 23 to 28 degree centrigrade.
 
I have tried RS180 where the ear-cups sits more comfortably and also the velvet fabric is gentle on the ear. At low level that I have tried it at showroom it seems that it is unlikely to disturb my spouse as those around me at the showroom was not particularly disturb.
 
So I am likely to go with the RS180 as you have already confirmed that I will experience sound leakage only at high levels for the RS180.

By the way if I buy it from Germany , will there be a likelihood that Sennheiser Singapore can refuse to repair it or if they do they will charge higher repair fees ?
 
As regards international warranty if available ,  will it be valid and be honoured anywhere where Sennheiser Service Center exists as such centers are  run by the parent company  ?
 
I am interested in buying from amazon Germany and I also would like to buy extra Velvet earcup covers but I have no means to request Amazon Germany for these extra as there is no feature/facility for me to communicate with them. I guess the covers and the velvet band pads I have look elsewhere.

Buying from Amazon.com directly is fine. But if you are buying from another company or reseller through Amazon.com, please ensure that they are authorised sellers/dealers. 
 
Having said that, please keep your proof of purchase (i.e. confirmation of sale with Amazon.com or reseller) in case you need to send the product for service/repair. But do keep in mind that you can only send to Sennheiser's service centres. Thank you for the counsel which is greatly appreciated. Certainly I would prefer to buy direct from Amazon but as to how to surface a problem to them I cannot figure out as there is no line of communication to ask. In any case if there is any repair required in the course of using it I would prefert to repair in SIngapore and the costs of sending to and from Germany is forbidding.
 
I have tested the RS180 which was more comfortable on the ears than the RS170.
 
However as it will last me for a few years and almost nightly use I am having trepidation regarding its weight. at 204 grams whereas HDR45 weighs in at 175 grams

Are these HDR45 no more available anywhere and is there an equivalent version whether RF or Digital which is just as light with preferably (1) open dynamic (2) Velvet earcups .
 
Understand someone told me that Singapore Government bans equipment using RF of 900 or  above from use in SIngapore . What 900 value stands for I do not know and would like to know. So are there any Sennheiser Earphones with RF within the 900 indicator that I can buy.
 
As I have said I would like to stick to Sennheiser , Wireless, Light and Comfortable on the ears for night listening over TV not Hifi stereo so sound quality is good to have but not must have.
 
Does Germany use below 900 or over 900 spectrum ?
 
Would be grateful with your enlightening responses to my queries.

Great forum with one of the biggest thread about these headphones here.
However, I've read the entire thread here, and a few in other places, and I still have a few questions about RS/HDR-160.

Use case:
I'm going to buy two pairs of 160, RS-160 + HDR-160, and connect them to my TV to watch movies mostly. So, could someone who have experience with such a setup help me a bit?

My questions are:

1. When two headphones are paired to one transmitter, if I adjust the volume on one unit will it change on the other? I saw complaints from people that it does. If so, is it related only to 160, or to all 160/170/180?
2. Is it possible to listen the headphones while charging or simply being connected to the power supply?
3. Is it possible to use compatible power supply to charge headphones instead of original one? What are the parameters of the charger (voltage, current)? I want to create a few "charging points" at home.
4. How long should I charge headphones from "totally discharged" state to listen them for 3 hours? The problem is that I have to keep them inside the cabinet, away from my little son, and I'm afraid that sometimes I forget to charge them

Apologies for this late reply. I got the flu over the weekend and just got back to the office today. 
 
Anyway, I managed to speak to our engineers and was told that you should be able to keep the transmitter and source close together. I've tried to search for this statement "keep transmitter and source at least 20 cm far apart" in our instruction manual but to no avail. 
 
As for your last query, you do not need to turn off your source before connecting your transmitter.
