I did it too, I got a HD 650 cable as a replacement for the damaged cable of my former HD 535. The HD650 cable was cheaper (?!) (at Thomann cyberstore), of course I expected better sound quality, last but not least by avoiding the 6,3mm/3,5mm jack adapter.
In fact, it sounds better and the coating is thicker and softer resulting to less mechanical noise if you move the cable. The same cable connects now my HD565 Ovation.
But my HD650 cable connector seem to loose contact both in the HD535 and in the HD565 cans (mostly on the right side), which didn´t apear with the stock HD535 cable. I don´t know if the connector pins are bented or the plastic connector socket form doesn´t exactly match to the cans. The 650´s cable has a larger connector socket than the 565´s.
Anyway, contact cleaning spray doesn´t help really. I have to press the connector stronger into the can´s sockets, then I hear and "feel" a "click" and it sounds again loud and full. But after the next movement the loose contact is there again...

I tried the defoaming mod on my HD650, and I hated it. I haven't done anything with my HD600, and I don't plan to. I use an upgraded cable, which is a massive improvement over the stock cable. That's as far as I'm willing to go.

Get some Pro Gold contact enhancer (not cleaner) in one of its many forms. I had that problem and Pro Gold fixed it.

Alternately known as the "foam removal mod" or perhaps the "555 ---> 595 mod" - this was one of the first mods I did on my HD 555--and one of the most substantive. Don't think I'd have stuck with it if all I used my 555's for was movies, though.

Also, you can see once you start digging into this stuff, sometimes the design spec. for the headphone isn't really targeting the "high end" as much, so you find design elements and other things that were left out for product pricing sake. I don't expect you'd find as much of this with the higher-end gear.

I've been quite pleased with how these mods, in particular, turned out (a couple others I tried were actually worse). You can read my detailed impressions on my blog. I've been musing that the only thing I could really do to improve these further would be to see if I can shoehorn some 650 drivers into them.

I might just be insane enough to try it.

My headband cracked so I rigged it with aluminum sheet metal and stainless steel rivets. I need to either find a cover for it or replace it...or not.

My nickel mod is simply a cut-out at the driver with fiberglass window screen to help protect the driver.

Neat stuff! I actually think the "industrial" look that the sheet metal and rivets give to the headband is kinda cool. You just have to ignore the crack...

I modded my hd600s before by taking out the foam behind the driver and the one in front. I thought they lost some bounce to the sound and some reverb was added. Tonality(especially the highs) would have been better without the extra ringing(some undamped reverb of some sort) I heard.

Few days ago I replaced the drivers of my HD565 with parts from the HD580 precision. I replaced the inner cans (the part with the paper screen where the driver is attached on) too, but I think they are the same. Now the same HD650 cable has good contact in the driver´s connectors, although it stills looks stranger with the HD565´s cups.
Unfortunately I don´t hear great difference between HD565 and HD580 drivers. It means, HD580drivers in HD565 cups sound almost like HD565 drivers in HD565 cups. The screen material is the same crude paper, not the later fine silk.

I replaced stock 580 cable with a DIY silver cable someone here built. Very nice improvement. More detail and pace, still has the basic sound I like so much.

Have HD600 grilles on order. A minority of users swear the change is real with new grilles. I'm willing to take a shot given that the worst thing that happens is I have much better looking cans.
