Probably like a lot of people here, I'm in an HD650 re-appreciation phase. Yes there are lots of cans that do specifics things better, but oh what a sweet, smooth tone...

Smooth is the word, eh? Fantastic with music such as this...

Sharon Robinson's duet here is to die for.

My set up was very able to control the bass (SPL Auditor/Gungnir DAC/bit perfect output from JRiver). We just likely have different ideas about how much, and what kind of bass works for us. The Auditor is a stupidly good SS amp so if that couldn't control the D7000 you must have a mega-buck boutique amplifier as the Auditor isn't exactly a piece of budget kit. I had parametric EQ cuts and everything, just too much bass.

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD

I was listening to music with the streaming desktop application (Qobuz, MP3 320/FLAC library for a monthly fee) I installed yesterday.

I was looking at the option and noticed I could change the audio output device, mine was Default: Speakers (ASUS Xonar Essence ST Audio Device. I tried a few things, DirectSound, WinMM, Wasapi... until the last one: ASIO : ASUS Xonar ASIO driver.

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD

I'm 25 and actually have never been stunned for my mouth to remain open, I didn't even know what it felt like (even thought it was mostly exageration from people), yet I stayed like that for 2 minutes.
"So THAT's the sound those guys are talking about, this is so beautiful!". So much fuller and precise. I'm still listening as I wrote and can't stop having goosebumps

I kept my HD-600 since I already tried the HD-650 again and they still have too much bass for me, BUT MAN DAT SOUND.

I do like the HD series from 580 to the 650 because they are modular and you can have what suits you easily and not that expensive. It's so German: rational, well-thought and well implemented.
I have the HD580 Jubilee. Recently I renovated all the pads and bought the 650 capsules. I kept the looks and the top pad of the Jubilee (which I prefer) and I now have the sound of the 650. If I change the system and want to go back to the 580, it takes less than 5 minutes to change. Oh yes the 580 capsules still work flawlessly after almost 20 years.
So if you have a 580 or 600 you can change them to 650 for about Eur 80, from Sennheiser service. It means that you can keep pace with improvements without buying a new HP. That's respect for the customer base.
I don't know any other brand with this approach.

I love the way trumpet sounds on the 650's.

Hmm.. any Audeze owners can comment on how they do on really complex music compared to the 650's? 650's have a hard time keeping up in separation.

LCD-2.2 is gorgeous with classical music, incl symphonic and choral music. It and my Grado PS500 and GS1000i are my preferred cans for large-scale classical.

The 650 I use for female vocal, small ensembles, and rock (the 650 tames the brightness on some hard rock traclks like Rush, Beck, and LedZep).

LCD-2 separates instruments better for me (guess more treble detail). Also overall image is more coherent.
They're definitely not brighter than HD650, but more resolving, for sure.

For example, while this song is more pleasing to listen to on my 650's, they seem to have a hard time seperating all the instruments. My Q701 is much better at instrument separation in this song.

obviously people who desire detail quantity and resolution shouldn't focus on hd650, but I guess most people here went up the detail road and came back like I did. there is a moment where too much instrument separation and details take the music appart and at least for me it lessens my enjoyment of it. that's what makes me go away from hd800 or ER4s even more than the signature itself(but anyway signature and feeling of details and space are linked).

the success of the hd650 it to be able to give us music as one element, yet still has a very descent resolution when you seek for it. it's certainly a matter of taste, but it's an equilibrium that works for me. I think the LCD2 is a HD650 with everything better, I listened to one 2weeks ago again and they really have a lot in common. but I feel like I need to listen louder and it's too heavy for me to ever consider replacing my hd650 with it. I can't imagine spending 4hours with a LCD2 and not complain about my neck.

After 2 days I have no complains. They're very comfortable (at least the bamboo version with vegan pads).

I think the weight would be a deal-breaker for me too. Headphones need to disappear for me.
