After intensive modding on the HD558 I did some A/B testing at the shop and I finally prefered the HD558 over the HD598 by a hair. The clarity was the same while the modded HD558 had a richer, fuller lower end. Not sure how the results would be if I had the chance to mod the shop's HD598. Probably the HD598 would have managed to keep its lead.

Talk about saved money

All LIES!! How dare you compare the 598's to the petty and INSIGNIFICANT 558's... that's like comparing a ferrari to a hyundai! They all have the same drivers but that doesn't mean a thing!!!!! All cars have wheels!!! and they;re alll different!!?!!!

I have owned both the 558 and 598, and they do not sound all that different to me. The HD 598 has more of a treble emphasis, it is more lush, less warm, a tad more refined. This Is comparing the unmodded versions.

I have heard (and LOVE) the HD-650, as I really like the laid back nature of the highs, and thought the bass sounded very natural when playing rock music. I was listening to Soundgarden "Fell on black days" and when the bass came in, I nearly had to change my pants!!! 

 
The 650s seriously blew me away. Even at high volume (ipod touch to a Headroom Micro Amp) I remained in sonic bliss. 
 
Do any of these three come close to the sound of the 650?

Could you please elaborate on the differences? I am curious to know how the 500 series compares. I should try to get some listening time with them (of course) before making any purchase, but reading reviews/getting opinions is half the fun of message boards IMO.

You'll get varying opinions, but generally speaking, the 650 is a dark, warm, lush, laid-back and bassy headphone. The 558 and 598 aren't.

Could really use some help. I can't decide between 380 or 558s. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is my first time paying over $20 for a pair of headphones. I'm not an audiophile, just wanna use it with my PC/macbook/ipod, etc...

I hate the 380's. They are uncomfortable and don't sound that great. The HD558's are open headphones though. Try out the recommendations forum.

Well leaving sound aside, the HD380 would definitely provide more isolation since it is closed. But the HD558 is very comfortable.
