Hopefully this thread will be a clearing house on everything HD-558 (and now also the HD518 & HD598)
(I just ordered the HD-558s last night and the cans should be arriving on Monday.)
People can post comparisons of their HD-558 verses other headphones (and other Sennheisers) they use.
Post Ideas for any mods for the HD-558.
Find out which headphone amplifiers bring out the best of the HD-558s.
Figure out which EQ settings bring out the best for movies, music, games, etc.
So just anything to do with the HD-558 (and also HD518 & HD598).

Just received my HD-558 today, so far sounds about the same as my AD700s.
(listened to a lot of Newage music)
Hopefully the HD-558s sound will improve after 100 hours of use.
(will try more bassy music for the next test)

How can the HD 558 sound like the AD700? LOL, I have both and they don't even sound like one another

I'm testing them using my Essence STX with LME49860 op-amps.
Hopefully the Essence helps improve any weakness in both headphones.
There are differences between the two cans, HD-558 slightly more bass.

What differences do you hear between the two cans?

all a matter of opinion, i find the bass loses a bit of control with the mod

As well be aware that when u mod it you lose ur warranty and if you have a pair with the cracking problem, that's a bad thing

Maybe removing all the Black rubber tape is too much.
How about only removing two thirds of the black rubber tape.
Just take out the black rubber tape, cut off one third of the tape and put the 1/3 piece back in.

wait, just to clarify, ur talking bout the foam mod right? if so the foam mod works (if my logic is right) by allowing the drivers to get more air (which should explain the increase in bass) but the foam piece also restricted some of the driver's movements so with that gone, it can move more (should explain the bass gain and/or the control loss) so it may work

The HD-558 sounds better without the mods?

currently i have the hd 558 (futureshop) and hd 598 (razordogdeals)

Got the hd 558 from buy one get one free. Probably going to return them cuz no point in having both hd 558 and 598. Removing the foams on the hd 558 makes them brighter

I find the 598 more comfortable to wear on my head, just enough clamping pressure and the head side slider is more smooth/easier to adjust than the 558

As for the sound I find the 598 bit brighter and soft keys are bit more noticeable
