Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

If the 2.5mm connectors don’t have that special side “notch” that lets them fit into place within the “proprietary” HD700 side connectors, then no.
Well, this is not entirely true. IMO, it's more accurate to term the HD700 connectors semi-proprietary; regular 2.5mm connectors may work if they are long and thin. I'm using a balanced Periapt cable with the HD700 and it works fine even though it lacks that notch. However, I confirmed with Periapt that the cable would work before ordering since the HD700 cable is finicky. For example, I have an original Hifiman 400i with the 2.5 connector revision (the first version of that headphone had a screw in cable connector) and its stock cable will not work with the HD 700 (although the horrible stock HD700 2.5mm cable will work with the 400i). I'd be leery of aftermarket cables for the HD700 that are not specifically intended for that headphone unless you can confirm compatibility in advance or are sure it is returnable.

I see - thank you for the input; they told me that it would "probably" work but, as you point out, I'd rather not risk it. FWIW, I can get a custom made Forza Audioworks and/or Invictus cables with proper connectors for a little extra money. And I wholeheartedly agree, the stock cable is absolutely horrible across the board. Which is why I would rather change it.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but i'll give it a go.
Do anyone have any recommendations of headphones similar to HD700 but with deeper/more punchy bass?
I would avoid Sennheiser altogether, I'm not aware of any product they make, that has punchy bass. I had sold HD700s specifically because of their wimpy bass with classic rock, and EDM music. I had liked them with female vocals and strings. I had replaced them with Shure SRH-1540s. Bass was more in quantity, but a bit loose, with those. It wasn't as good as that of my Audeze LCD-X 2021s. There's the Beyerdynamic DT1770, but they might be inferior to the Shures, at your price point.

I bought my HD700 sheepskin leather ear pads on ebay US and it was shipped from the UK, but I could not find another link on ebay FR, so here are some MisoDiko HD700 sheepskin leather earpads on AliExpress (authentic MisoDiko and real sheepskin leather, I am sure  ):

Yes, the HD6XX sounds nothing like the HD700, but the HD6XX does not sound much like a HD600 either. People have said that the HD600 is superior to the HD700 from the lack of a treble spike, more smooth sound signature, and better neutrality overall, like how people have said that the HD800 is superior to the HD700. Hence, they see the HD700 like a mini-HD600 and mini-HD800. You really have to dissect the HD700's sound signature by dissecting the HD800's sound signature from their earcup meshing, which is made from the same material. I had to buy sheepskin leather earpads (which I later learned was a PU-leather/sheepskin-leather hybrid :frowning2: ) for my HD800 to make the sound signature more tonal with a much more coherent soundstage, before making the HD700 the same and figuring out how the HD700 was supposed to fit consistently.

Edit: @Idol77, I think I found the same ear pads that I bought...at a much cheaper price :frowning2: :

I ordered a custom made cable from Invictus cable (based in Rome) - very happy with it.

I appreciate the input and certainly respect your opinion, but I have come to really appreciate what the Senn 700 have to offer; with my gear and my tastes in music, they have always offered a very enjoyable musical experience - near mesmerizing with certain genres; their comfort, over long listening sessions, is a very welcomed bonus. I'm sure there are other headphones at their price point (or lower) that might better the 700's in certain aspects but for me, they are here to stay. Incidentally, I'm really enjoying the new cable I use with them (Invictus) that, much like the Dekoni earpads I have on them (sheepskin & velour, interchangeably), does offer subtle improvements to the sound.

Owned HD 700 since 2016. Purchased at a discount. Soon after, headband pads crumbled, ear pads eventually fell apart and stock cable never ideal. With this said, these are my goto HP for gaming and watching movies. Sounds great for music, but have other HPs excel in music. Now, I have upgraded Black Dragon cable from Moon, Dekoni suede ear pads and today added the Dekoni leather nuggets. The HD 700s will go down as one if not my all-purpose favorite HP.

Amazingly similar to my experience with the HD700, which I bought on sale new from an authorized dealer for $420 in 2017. My pair has worn a little better despite fairly heavy daily use for five years. The headband and padding are still pristine (knock wood) though the pads tore after around 3.5-4 years and I also replaced them with Dekoni suede. The stock cable is dreadful--way too long for my use case, unpleasant to the touch, endless kinky (and not in a good way). I've had several replacement cables (none as pricey as Black Dragons though and the most expensive one I had crapped out after 2-3 years) and currently use a Periapt balanced XLR cable. The HD700 was once my daily driver, but I never use it for music anymore, however it is still my default headphone for TV and movies since the wide and immersive soundstage works well. I am thinking of replacing it for that purpose with a Hifiman Ananda which also has a big soundstage.

The sounds stage is what makes rhese ideal for gaming and movies. I can listen to TV on ultra expensive speakers, but choose to use the HD 700 majority of the time. I use my Accuphase preamp to drive these, which they don't need, but conveniently available.

I have had mine since 2014 or 2015 (when they were still expensive as heck, $750) and they are still in pristine shape. I use them for music all the time, though I do use Oratory 1990 auto-eq preset. I am using a DX300, from Neutron Music Player. The cable I use (certainly not the POS stock) is Hart Audio Cables (modular cables). You can get the custom made one for the HD700, but I found the regular 2.5mm cable works just fine in the HD700.

I wouldn't trade mine away at this point. They are just that unique to me.

I share my HD700 with my son, for gaming , and me for music.
Always so happy

I always come back to my HD 700 as my daily driver despite all these years. I don't know why... The original headband padding flaked and fell apart. Replaced. The original earpads split, I used contact cement and glued + stitched it back. Still holding up after 5 years. Recently upgraded from Audio-gd NFB 11.28 to FiiO K9 Pro decided to get a 4.4mm balanced cable for this bad boy.

Went with this one on AliExpress. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002716892873.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.0.0.4ed5d2d6xsXsV8 got the 2 meter one which is just long enough but not super long to be a drag during daily use. Sooo much better than stock stiff garbage (I got a cheap dual 2.5mm mono to 3.5mm cable on Amazon cheap a few years back that had really skinny connectors so it fit in the HD 700 2.5mm even without the special notch) https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01N20Z6QZ

I have been having some issues with my setup for a number of months, I had been getting some hiss, extreme "S" and "T" emphasis, and weird ultrafrequency noise in one channel, which I recently managed to pin down, and it turned out to be a faulty op amp. Having had to swap for a spare pair, I've since had to re-learn what each of my headphones sounds like with the new signature. The old op amp combo was 2x burson v6 classic singles with 2 burson v6 vivid duals, and the new combo replaces the vivids with muses02.
Generally speaking I have enjoyed the tradeoff with most of my headphones, with the main exception being the HD700, which this pairing doesn't seem to compliment quite so well, which is rather interesting!

The new sound loses some soundstage width, loses both treble and bass extention, air, microdetails, and loses its more forward presentation.
What is gained is soundstage depth, different imaging (can be better or worse depending on the track) a midbass boost, more bass punch and much more hardness on the leading edge of notes.
With the vivids I found that everything was just a tad too soft, but with the extra 'edge' now, it really brings out tapping and textural sounds, which I am actually enjoying a lot, despite missing all the microdetails. But with the 700's, it is a bit of a different story.

The effect of the overall change with these seems to be, for want of a better term, exaggerated. Where once there was precise and detailed bass, now a more vague midbass presence takes over. And where there was once lots of air and separation across the width of the stage, the air gets cut off dramatically, whilst the depth of the stage pushes half of the instruments far away from me, whilst other instruments are very close to me, creating an unusual, though very interesting dual-layer presentation. Having drums in the background with a very forward bass creates an interesting presence, particularly with orchestral tracks, though for rock I find it quite hard to focus on both of them at the same time now, which is a bit fatiguing.
This is not to say that I think these headphones sound bad now, but the tradeoff in qualities is just that much greater as compared to my other headphones, that it turns them into something very different. And whilst a moderate amount of this new signature works very well for some of my headphones, I find it to be too much with the 700's: a little goes a long way.

I had read here and there about the HD700 (and HD800) being quite difficult to pair with equipment, and having only had my original setup since owning them, its something I haven't been able to relate to. Now that I've experienced it for myself, I can really appreciate that notion. It is almost as if they are so transparent to the rest of the chain, that they almost "become" what they are plugged into, and I am really quite interested to seeing what happens with them in the future when I am able to upgrade my amp and dac
