Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread
Aug 28, 2013 at 10:32 PM Post #542 of 9,298
This is my first post on here so I hope it's a decent one. I purchased a pair of HD700's a couple of weeks ago and I let them burn in for 200 hours. I changed the cable over to the Moon Audio Black Dragon balanced cable. I have been using these headphones in a portable system with great results. I have the ALO RX MK-3+, the Cypher Labs Solo db, Moon Audio Silver Dragon line cable, and an iPod. I have been through so many headphones but I am really enjoying these headphones the most. I find these phones to be detailed without sounding bright, the bass goes down deep while remaining tight, the mids are very transparent, and the soundstage is wide. On this portable system I have used the Hifiman HE-400's, Sennheiser HD600's, Beyerdynamic T90's and even the HD800's which I really only use in the house on a Melos amp. The Hifiman HE400's are fun headphones which I like but they can sound dark and lack detail even with the velor pads. The T90's I did not like at all. I found them to be way too bright. I like the HD600's overall, there is not much to complain about with those except that they can sound diffuse. The HD800's have amazing detail and dynamics but they can sound a little thin to me. They don't quite have enough bass. Here is where the HD700's come in. The sound quality falls somewhere between the HD600's and the HD800's. They do everything better then the 600's without the brightness of the 800's. The 700's are fuller sounding then the 800's too. They are not as detailed as the 800's but detail is not everything. These HD700's make me want to get out to the track and walk. I walk for a couple of hours sometimes and I really enjoy it. In a way these headphones contribute to lowering my blood pressure!!
I am sort of new to the headphone universe but I have been into and own a high-end audio system using speakers. I have the Pass Labs 350.5 amp, Audio research Ref 3 pre-amp, Magnepan 3.7 speakers, 2 Velodyne DD+15 subwoofers, Meridian CD player and a VPI turntable. Audio has been my passion for 30 years and I have owned so many different high-end systems. I wanted to mention all my equipment because I wanted to show how much I am into audio.
I hope this post helps.

Yep, the only problem is that I cannot stop listening music on my HD700.

So folks, would you say that the HD700 is closer to the sound of the HD650 that it is to the HD800? A more warm, musical signature?

I do hear that some have serious issues with the treble...it's a bit cold and steely?

No it's not close to the sound of HD650. It's closer to HD-800. It has a lot of treble presence like the HD-800, but HD-800 has better quality treble.

I'd never describe the HD700 as colr nor steely. It's on the 'fun' side of bright rather than the 'accurate' side. If you really want to talk in audiophile terms it has a lot of 'PRaT' and sounds very musical and dynamic. These have the best dynamic range I've ever heard. What it doesn't do is give a massive airy soundstage, accurate timbre, or a neutral sound. Detail wise it's equal to my STAX SR-5, the HE-6, and slightly behind the Beyerdynamic T90(micro-details at least, the HD700 has much superior spacial clues) I suspect higher end STAX, the HD800, and the T1 would be at least a few levels better in that category.

I can't compare to the HD600 or 650 but it's clearly superior to the Ultrasone PRO2900, and miles above the HD598

It's a brighter, wider, more refined version of a HD598.

Very interesting comments. I keep hearing "fun". Music is fun.

But "brighter than a HD598" kinda worries me..

Oh, one more thing....does the HD700 leak a lot of sound out the back of the earcups, compared to the HD800, HD650, K701 etc.?

It has more upper treble than the HD-598 so yes it is brighter. Then again one flaw with the HD-598 is the bass which is much better on the HD-700 so all in all HD-700 comes out as a winner. HD-700 leaks a lot, yes. That is the way it's constructed. Hold your hands closer to the earcups and the sound changes a lot (lesser soundstage/air), not so much on HD-600/HD-650 (in comparison to the HD-700).

IMO, it doesn't have a cold or steely sound at all and the trebles will be smoothing out after 200~300 hrs of listening/burn-in.
