Sennheiser HD 600 Impressions Thread

I tend to agree. You can do a lot better with the HD600. Tubes or solid-state...the HD600 will still scale.

IMO the HD600's don't scale, they are neutral and pretty true to form. Change the chain and it will reflect any audble changes to the chain, good or bad. If the change does not yield audible changes, it all stays the same.

Isn't it called 'scaling'? Upgrading the chain (source, amp) will make the HD600 sound better and better.

I see your point here, but how would you define a headphone that scales?  Thanks!

Not I, the headphone doesn't require a better chain for it to perform better. The HD600 performs the same. You ever hear the term GIGO, Garbage In Garbage Out?

How about an HE-6 that requires more power than most normal headphones. That's really a question of being underpowered. I think the term scaling is overstated, it's more of a question of meeting a can's driving requirements, the rest is GIGO as in my previous post.

The nice opened, dynamic and realistic sound of the HD600 can not be beaten by an IEM like IE80. Although IE80 sounds great, especially with an amp and custom tips, it is enjoyable on the go... But can not take the crown from the HD600, as they are much more realistic, opened, smoother, bigger space... Not to mention, it is more comfortable to wear...
They are much closer though regarding sq, than I thought before I purchased my HD600. (Nearly 2 years ago.) But still HD600 is a clear winner...

True.
Still many wants to compare IEMs with full HPs...

I think one needs to compare a full HPs to an IEM to make the purchase worthwhile. If it doesn't beat my IEM's, I won't buy it.

Yeah the idea of scaling sounds dumb until you hear what it can do.

The HD600 has the potential to perform on a highly level precisely because it's more neutral and true to the signal it is fed, like you said. If the HD600 was an overly colored piece of crap, obviously it wouldn't be able to reflect changes in source and amplification. Sounds like you agree with me

If we're talking about amplification and "power" then the quantity is not what I'm talking about. It's about quality. The quantity or "it gets loud enough" argument is a distraction.
