I don't have the resources to test many headphones. I own the 660S, the 600, a Meze Neo and a HiFiMan HE400S. I only use the 660's.
NOooooo... not what i wanted to read today! I have the HD660s & its my holy grail, my list of headphones i don't use is to long to list but basicly i traded one for a HD600 thinking i'd use it. Guess another for the pile on the floor.

Eh, look at it this way: you've traded one headphone that isn't being used much for another headphone that's not going be used much (so you think) so I guess that's a net zero result? :D

Never could understand Tyll's review. Maybe he got a bad pair...
.

Considering Tyll's background and knowledge at the time of his review, I personally doubt it had to do with a "bad pair". Personally I tried the 660 S & didn't like them either. IMHO the HD600 is a better sounding headphone. But it's all a matter of taste and opinion & I respect those who prefer the 660 S. I'm just not one of them.

If I had to summarise my impressions on HD600 vs HD660S, I'd say the HD600 has better scaling ability and resolve with high end amps than the HD660S (especially with tubes), but the 660S outperforms the 600 on budget amps with superior punch and clarity. On decent mid-tier solid state amplification, I'd say it's pretty much a tie between the two with only minor differences and ultimately comes down to which flavour you prefer.

...and I think that's what Tyll was stating in his 660S review. Not that it's a bad can, but that it's just another variation in an excellent series.

You hit it on the head regarding scalability. I find the 600 imprints less of its personality on the music, as do good higher end cans.

I watched Tyll's review again on Youtube just to make sure of what he had to say & not rely solely on my memory and it's obvious he's quite reluctant in recommending the 660 S. At the end of the video Tyll says that if it were any other company than Sennheiser who made the 660 S he would say it's a very good headphone but since it was made by Sennheiser and it's a replacement for the HD650 he's disappointed with the end product. He also recommends the HD600 & HD650 over the 660 S, even the 6XX.

To my understanding, Tyll's statement was not exactly that the 660 S was "another variation" in an excellent series. He's clearly disappointed with this model compared to the other two.

Its one person's view - and it aligns with his (Tyll's) own preferences. I had the 660S for almost two weeks, and had a chance to compare it a lot with my HD600. The 660S reminded me a lot of the 800S (which I also own). If they were the same price, or if I found someone willing to swap, I'd trade my HD600 for the 660S. To me - it just has slightly better balance. Both great headphones - superiority comes down to preference.
