ive been surfing head fi and i saw a quote that stated that you can get 200 dollar closed can sound quality from 80 dollar opened cans.

 wow where are these headphones?

This is absolutely untrue. Unless, of course, the $200 closed cans are really crappy. Closed headphones, especially modern ones, are capable of going toe to toe, if not beating out comparable open headphones.

why? whats exactly is the difference? ive never had an open can :/ i always thought myself as cheap for not dubbing up and getting an open grado or something.

Closed cans have more impact because the sound waves are contained inside the cups. Open headphones have less impact because the soundwaves escape, but they tend to have a wider sound stage and more detail.

For hip hop, techno, pop, etc, closed are probably best. Open would sound good with jazz, acoustic, classical, etc.

But this isn't a hard and fast rule. Good headphones sound good, great headphones sound great and bad sound bad. You just have to find what you like best yourself.

But it's also a good reason to have multiple phones. You can use whatever suits the style of music you're listening to.

so the grado sr 60i is the way to go?whats the 1up or the 2up headphones from grado that are open? just a little weird to compliment a $150 headphone with a $60 one...

well Ive always like to alternate between the Alessandro MS1 and the HD25, i love them both. I am yet to try the MS2 or the Sr225, Ive read great t hings abotu them.

and yeah for me, and me only: MS1 > SR60 > SR80

I just demo'd the Grado 225's against the HD-25 II's the other day and chose the HD-25s, for what it's worth, so I wouldn't bother with the 60 or the 80.
