Sennheiser GSX 1000 / 1200 Impressions

Increasing bit depth increases the signal to noise ratio (and notionally dynamic range); the sound of dialogue or music should not shift levels between 16 or 24 bit.

I've just got the GSX 1200 so will be periodically reporting on it's abilities here.

1) Read the thread, this isn't about the actual difference between 16 vs 24 bit, but what the GSX does differently when 16/24 bit is selected.
2) Why on Earth did you get the 1200?

1. Yes thanks, I read most of the thread. I'm not sure what your problem with the 1200 is, but since you asked I chose the 1200 beause it was on offer on Amazon for a lot less than the 1000.
2. Re: 24 and 16 bit, yes you're right 16 and 24 bit audio is treated seperately, but it's very easy to be mis-interpret 24 bit audio as being louder because of the extra bits, it doesn't work like that - although I 'm sure you knew that. As far as I can tell 16 bit audio, both 2 and 7.1 is attenuated a few db.

I can't get the 1200 to do 24 bit at the moment, so I'm assuming it's a Windows driver thing - I 'm using Windows 7; I will onvestigate this.

Hey guys,

for those of you, who wondered what's inside - I've just disassembled mine, here are the guts:

It uses Conexant's CX20833 for DSP and CX20745 as DAC/AMP

My Objective2 will arrive this week and hopefully the GSX 1000 , if not this week , next week.

What should I do as soon as it arrive ? connect and set to 7.1 16bit 48Khz and what else ? I want the best surround without EQ , I don't need it as I have DT990 which has everything for my ears.

I will get the Objective2 before the GSX 1000, will I be able to check it out using with my sound card Asus DLX RAID ? if so how will I connect it so the Objective2 will do the amp, how will I know if the Objective2 AMP is better than the Asus DLX RAID , that will cause issues right ? never have the first AMP higher than the second ? or was it never have the second AMP ?

Thanks

Guys which usb2 did you connect the card? I only left with usb 3.0 ports because the only 2 I don't use are the IRQ 16 which the gpu get. what can I do if I don't want the keyboard corsair k65 rapid red 1000 hz and Logitech g502 1000 hz on IRQ16 which at the moment are IRQ23. but I don't have spare usb2 to connect the GSX.

1. which one did you connect yours?
2. what can I do so it won't share IRQ16?
3. Can I connect the GSX to USB3, if so would it cause issues?

Thanks

2. It works from usb 2 and 3.

do you use usb2 or 3? which IRQ usb host did you connect it? 16 or 23?

Also for movies, what should I do if you guys say it doesn't sound good ? Should I kep my Asus DLX RAID connected ? would I be able to switch between them ? should I switch between them when watching movies ?

I think I've discovered a bug.
Communication audio doesn't work when the device is in HD mode.

Simply switching to 24 bit (must play a Main Audio sound to kick the device into 24 bit mode) will completely mute communication audio.
Can someone else confirm?

I don't think you suppose to use 24bit for communication anyway. I think it's for all sound card. I had big issues when using 24bit for communication, I don't even think there is a different , just compability issues with 24bit.

Edit
Ignore I miss read, if I playing sound from the communication device and I change from 16bit or 24bit that does indeed mute communication until sound is played from the main audio.

This is understandable though, even though we have two output devices that are both connected to the PC by a single USB when resetting the USB for other outputs this will switch off all devices while the change is being made. If the GSX had two separate USB connection this wouldn't happen.

Working ok here, you cant hear it because I not recording the communication device but look at the volume indicator.
