I am taking a wild guess but I bet we will see Ragnarok 2 (tube amp) which could be upgraded from Ragnarok 1. The reasons for this guess is due to schiit audio have been working on Ragnarok tube version before it released SS Ragnarok.

An upgrade from a Rag 1 would require a change of the metal case? I don't know how cost effective that could be. Including balanced out to speakers with tubes could be a costly addition as well.

But, maybe that's why the Rag has been on back order for a while per their website.

We should all know the score in a few hours, until then, 2 Prozac and a couple beers should do the trick!

Edit

I bought the book on Amazon and read it. Thought I remembered something about Rag hybrid:

QUOTE:
Why is this important? It’s important for control over the speaker load. Speakers are physically large. They need a reasonable damping factor. As a single gain stage amp, Ragnarok would have had an output impedance of about 0.5 ohms in high gain—fine for a headphone amp, but equivalent to a damping factor of only 8 into 4-ohm loads. Not exactly ideal.

But, as it turned out, the first Ragnarok prototype was so problematic, we never got it fully operational. The tube stage didn’t get enough power from the transformer. The solid-state stage had so many layout errors that it wasn’t really worth fixing them all. And the board changes needed to accommodate both tube and solid-state really made it impractical to have it swappable—it would have to be built one way or the other.

(And, of course, this tube vs solid-state realization came after I’d shot my mouth off about how Ragnarok would be configurable for either. Yeah. Again: just shut up.)

We hacked around with it a bit, blew up a few output stages, and never really heard music through it. So, finally, we did something sensible.

We went back to the drawing board.

The Second Ragnarok

The next Ragnarok was stripped down and simplified. We got a new transformer, only suitable for solid state use. We designed the main board only for solid state. We went to a two-stage amp with enough gain to give us the damping factor we needed.

END QUOTE

If there is a statement tube driven headphone amp behind door #1, I'm guessing it probably won't do speakers.

I'm hoping for some Jotenheim impressions from an attendee or two.  Please and thanks!

Somebody opened an impressions thread here:

No impressions yet since the show doesn't start for 20 minutes yet (I really wanted to be there)...
Cheers!

And it's official! We're turning up the volume on our second product announcement of the year—by making every other DAC/amp combo seem, well, soooo “last decade.”

Our new Jotunheim is the first modular headphone amplifier and preamp. Add the DAC module, and it’s a DAC/amp. Or, add the phono module and it’s a phono preamp/amp. Or, use it as “just an amp." This unique modular architecture allows for unmatched flexibility today, and eliminates the possibility of obsolescence due to ongoing changes in digital audio.

Jotunheim doesn’t compromise on the amp, the DAC, or the phono sections, and offers both balanced and single-ended inputs and outputs for both the preamp and headphone amp. The amp is our unique, fully discrete, differential current-feedback “Pivot Point” topology, delivering up to 5000mW into 32 ohms, yet also offering a vanishingly low noise floor. The DAC uses two top-tier AK4490 DACs in a hardware-balanced, passively filtered configuration. The phono card uses precision film capacitors and resistors in a passive RIAA section that is entirely DC-coupled.

Jotunheim is priced at $399, and either optional module (DAC or phono) adds $100.

I'm really excited for this product. It's going to make my Asgard 2 kind of irrelevant though. I will have to get the Jotunheim and sell off the Asgard 2 or move it to another setup.

I love the form factor and I could see this being a key product for people interested in having a speaker setup but are really confined on space. All you need is a place to put your amp and your speakers and boom you're done.

Jotunheim is "it". Sounds like a lot of flexibility and performance for the money.

Whew! As I slide safely into second base and wait for a pitching change and an E-Mail about my Ragnarok.
