Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

What? No immersion into a tank of mineral oil?

All kidding aside -- nice rig. My OC days are behind me, of course I never dared introduce water, but I'm an oldskool OC'er. A bit of pin masking, a huge heatrsink with 120mm fan, a Peltier, plenty of power, insulation to prevent condensate and I was off to the races. Now with an i7 quad at 3.5-4GHz, I don't even bother. Overclocking a graphics card is another matter altogether. :D

I must state again, it is a beautiful rig!!
Thank you
It is a binned cpu and will do 5Ghz like nothing, It goes faster but no point really. I'm not even much of a gamer, just a complete hardware junkie. Been at it for years, I pretty much never sell anything so I have quite a collection of PC stuff.
It's currently my main rig as I am now tearing down my semi-fanless rig to make a new completely silent workstation grade PC, this will be some pretty new stuff, and a compleat move to Win 10 for me. I am still not using latest /greatest hardware as I still need pci for my sound card.

This is the basic setup on a test bench, I'm using a older case I am modding for it. It has to be a very free flowing case for this to work. The heatsink is special and not available anymore I think, cost me more than I'd like. But I hate fans now:triportsad:

It will be stock speed with max turbo, then undervolted to the max to stay cool. It will have 1 fan just in case, but it should never run unless maxxed out, even then only 300 rpm.
I'm also modifying my corner audio table to be cherry and black granite with a large pedestal to raise the PC up above the audio gear, It's an ambitious project for me considering all I have on my plate.
But it will be cool.

Some of the parts are tiny even for me so I had to adapt. I also learned which parts I need to order extra of since just a slight mistake holding the parts and you never see them again.

I may try to get in touch with you when I get several of the boards built. The headphone rack used here is about $30 on Amazon, I did not build that.

Nice work!I will be in need of four small pieces of oak or walnut for a mono block amp build so maybe we can work out a trade. I can do some things but having the time is never easy. I used all hand tools for the archery rack, I went old school just for the heck of it.

Yes no problem, just let me know :beerchug:

Wow. Being in the IT field, I can fully understand your obsession with all things hardware. That is a very nice rig you have in progress. I agree -- quiet is where it is at, today.

OMG -- that heatsink is huge!! And I thought my Zalman copper heatsink from way back when was big! (An old mobo I've had lying around for more years than I care to mention. AMD K7/8 days)...

I still have one in my old PC bits and parts bin. It was the 1st big O/C processor and pretty much started the whole O/C thing!!

Took a socketed Celeron 600 to 1GHz using a Peltier. Used a slot converter so I could mask pins to over-volt. That was extreme OC'ing!! No plethora of BIOS settings back then -- no memory clock adjustments, just CPU clock and divider settings. :D

I just got a Define R6 TG to transplant my gaming/editing rig into (4790k, 1080ti, 32GB ddr3) and will be doing that on Thursday night. Currently it's in a Corsair 760t but it's way too loud. The R6 should be nice and quiet.

Here's a pic of it as it is now:

I even tried my hand at dry ice and liquid nitrogen in the P45,X48, and X58 days.
I was on OC forums mostly then, they have all but dried up, OCing is no big deal anymore.

So now I'm an Audiophile again, and Schiit has made it fun and affordable again.

Yeah, those were the halcyon days of overclocking. HardOCP, TomsHardware and Overclockers.net were my hang-outs. Never went any more extreme than Peltier, but I loved to watch those nitro OC'ers set records -- if only long enough for it to POST, Load Windows. and run one pass of a CPU benchmark!! :D

I too am back to being an audiophiliac once more. A bit more my speed now-a-days.

My first build/overclock was a Celeron 300 (MHz) that could overclock to 450 on the stock cooler. It was a slot processor (if you remember them).
My first build/overclock was a Celeron 400 (MHz) that was mild overclock to 500 on the stock cooler. It was a 370 in a slocket in a slot 1 mobo , the last time I ever overclocked, not being a gamer I'm more interested in reliability than overclocking. Sad, I know.

I've got a pair of OC'd liquid cooled big boxes in my basement for flight simming (nothing like the above, 4.3 and 4.6 max) but since I got back into audio 2 &1/2 years ago my focus has been more directed here at Head-Fi related things.

But I do like those PC Pics, very "Borg"-like.

I'm not a gamer either - I'm more interested in noise (or lack thereof) than speed. This is my current machine:

It isn't so unusual these days but when I first got it, it was really eerie using a totally silent computer.

Nice and clean:ok_hand:

Thanks, I'm excited to get it in the new case. These days I'm more interested in clean lines than crazy angles. The 760t looks too "gamery" for my current personal tastes but I appreciate the style.

I made that psu cover with some acrylic, a heat gun, and some vinyl wrap. It really improved the look of the build, but I don't want to see the drive cages and CD ROM bays either, so R6 is perfect for me.
