Samson SR850 (Superlux OEM) Review: A $50 Budget Champion.

That's very possible, but which 662?

I'm kind of regretting getting my DT770's because I want to try these :p

Why are you regretting? You should consider yourself lucky, you have the one of the best headphones that money can buy under $200. You now can buy the Superluxes and safely compare them to your DT770.

I'm not as lucky. I bought a Samson SR-850 as my first HP and was satisfied with it. Then I heard good things about the HD661 and bought that as well. The sounds were great. Now I'm not sure if I should go for an upgrade. I want an M50 or a DT770 but I'm hesitating because I don't know whether it would be $100 better in sound than my HD661.

As for which 662, we wouldn't know until someone took them apart and compare the drivers and wiring. Or if we could get a frequency response graph for the SR-950 and compare it to 662's from their website.

LOL, apparently now amazon is showing the sr850 with velour pads as the stock image, when they actually ship with the normal pleather ones.

LMAO, scumbag amazon.

For whatever it's worth, my Amazon SR850s that I got today came with these cloth/velour pads. Guess I should have held off ordering the Chinese K240 knockoff pads from eBay. Wonder if they'll be any better than stock.

I guess the lesson is that you generally have no idea what Amazon's going to send. I gave up trying to buy batteries from them, for instance, even given the big price difference, because I kept getting stock close to expiration (literally four years old last time).

I've had my SR850 for 2 years now.  They still work great but the headband has started to crack.  I plan on replacing the headband with leather or something similar.  Anybody try to get a replacement from Samson?

i did have the Shure SRH 440. I thought they were good at first but the more I compared them to my AKG k171, the more I liked k171's warmer sound signature.  I learned that these Samson SR850 is similar to AKG's sound signature so I returned the 440s to the store. I'm waiting for the SR850 from eBay right now. Go for SR850 instead.

I'm curious if the amp improves the sound of SR850 by much, given it's only 32ohms?

The FA-003 is 3x the price of Samson SR850 and the other is that you can't get it in Europe and have to import it from Russia.

This Samson SR850 is the same as the Superlux 668B.  The Superlux 668b is suppose to be a tiny tiny bit better.  Might want hop on the Superlux 668b Express Train.

  Here are another great earpads:

AD700's earpads fits perfectly on the SR850. They're seriously 10x more comfortable and sits on my ear without any leaks compared to stock earpads. They're for $3.90, directly from Audio-Technica and shipping is usually $4(US), so that's $7.90 total. You can just slap them on and listen, however some optional modifications can be made to make them sound like the original SR850(the AD700's earpad changes the sound).

Cut off the thin black cloth. I didn't try the pads on with the cloth so you can experiment to see if the sounds changes at all.

No bass? Too anemic? No problem. See those breathing holes behind the earpads? Cover them up.

Electrical tape works perfectly.

In my opinion, the sound is 95% the same, maybe a bit less bass with a wider soundstage. Enjoy your SR850 with more comfort!

I'm trying to find these pads but I cannot - are the AD700 pads still purchasable? I've been using my SR850's for 3 years now but it's always tiring taking them off after 2-3 hours...

If you live in US try the following
E-mail (Parts): parts@atus.com

Just e-mail saying you need a pair of ad700 pads. They WILL contact you within 1-3 days. He most likely will respond with yes we have them or no we don't and give you a price for the part and shipment and then ask for your paypal account.

Audio technica is a stand-up company when it comes to parts.   Another idea if you ever got sick of the Sr850 sound is you could order a pair of ad700 drivers for like $10-15 a pair. You'd have to do some light sanding on the inside to make them fit. The SR850's are 50mm drivers and the ad700's are 53mm. I've never done it with the SR850's but I have done it with other headphones and the sound was only slightly better.
