Roll Call for Team AKG

Although I've purchased HD650+Silver Dragon this week, I think I wanna join Team AKG:

AKG K701
AKG K501

For now my wife likes 650s more than I do

Guess I need more time with them.

...for what it is worth, I prefer the K340 to the K1000 in almost every way.

Because I don't consider the K340 a dynamic headphone. It's a hybrid, though it does have more of a dynamic character than an electrostatic character to my ear, or rather, it doesn't suffer from an electrostat's inherent colorations...

I haven't heard the K1k and would like to experiment with one. But, I'm keeping my K340, and probably getting several more. Right now my issue with it is in the over-zealous treble, but from what I've been reading this is only an issue with a few bass-light models. Everything else about it is great.

I think you can probably tweak that treble if you take your time with it... I think we already corresponded about this in one of the old K340 threads. It's true that the K340 is a hybrid, but most of the sound you hear comes from the dynamic drivers. I would consider it to be in a different class from other dynamic headphones only because of its demanding nature. It is very rewarding to build a system around the K340, but it takes time and not everyone is willing to dedicate themselves to one headphone to that extent.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I will build a very serious rig around the K340 eventually. It's just that this isn't my main headphone project at the moment, though I'm tempted to make it so. The K340, together with the ES2, has been the headphone that has come the closest to my sonic ideal. I will probably get a different set, and most likely go through several sets, rather than just tweaking this one, seeing how much difference there seems to be between the sound of different pairs. Once I have something that's tonally more-or-less where I want it to be, I'll start tweaking out the rest.

That's the way i feel about my K340.

It's nice, but, nothing to write home about.

I'm sure it can be made better, but, i already have cans that are better.

Yes you can, but that's like buying a Ferrari and only driving at 10mph. You won't enjoying it to its full potential. I've tried it with three different amps before getting it right, but once you're there, it's magical.

Count me in with a K240 Sextett. Loving every minute of it.

Just got a K400 today. I did a quick comparison of the K400 and K500. I didn't hear very much difference. The K500 is a little airy sounding, the K400 a little darker, but very close. One of these days, I'll get the K501 out and compare it. It's packed away now because I didn't like it compared to the K500. I want to try the very thin and soft pads that are on the K400 and K500 on the K501 to see if they improve the sound.
