That's the other thing I don't get about the K 601/612. I thought the K 601 had a very warm sound to begin with, to the point where the bass started to overpower the airy soundstage. It was tight bass, sure, but too much of it for my taste - so I don't quite see the rhyme in giving them even more bass in the K 612.

Well that's all personal preference, I find the K612s soundstage perfect for me, big and accurate, but not too big. Also AKG did say they made the soundstage wider on the K612, so it is probably helps offset the thickness interfering with the soundstage too much, as it doesn't interfere with the soundstage to me. I personally like the more robust thick sound to the airy sound. I do like a big airy soundstage at times, which is what I have the Sony MDR-MA900 for, but an airy sound is not what is most accurate sounding to me. I'm extremely sensitive to treble, so I have trouble with most airy sounding headphones as I often find them bright andgrainy in the treble. I can handle bright, just not treble grain, causes pain in my ears after extended listening sessions. I am more in the ortho camp in terms of sound, but if something has a nice big soundstage on top of a thick robust sound, all the better. You would think I would be a Sennheiser fan, but not really, I just don't find them that musical compared to AKGs personally.

Anyone know if the bass port is open on the K612?

I'd like to try the K712 pads on these..NOT the flatter (worse) Annie pads.
 
K601 was warmer to me than the K702 but not the Q701. The K601 pads have a lot to do with it actually.
 
With the Q701 and two K400s here I doubt I'd use the K612 that much. Q701 is on my head most of the time but I just acquired some Q701 pads for my K400s.
Didn't like the K601 or Annie pads on the K400.
 
K601 was always a favorite though for gaming..

I don't know, I haven't even attempted to open up my K612.
 
Depends on when the K702 was made, I heard two K702s at the same time with a Q701, the newer one sounded sounded exactly like the Q701, the older one was colder and brighter.
 
I can see why you like the K601 for gaming, I find the K612 fantastic for gaming.

Haven't posted much in this thread about my AKG headphones in a long time.
I've always been a fan of the general sound of AKG open headphones. Here's my favorites that i've owned in order:
(had the K601 and Q701 the longest)
 
1. AKG Q701 modded
2. AKG K712 Pro (I could live with either)
3. AKG K601 (has less issues to my ears than the K702. Sounds warmer than the K400, K501 and K702 too)
4. AKG K400 EP (darker than LP)
5. AKG K400 LP (seems thinner and more trebly than my EP)
6. AKG K501 (I really liked it but it's soundstage was too huge)
7. AKG K702 - Does some things better than the K400. Also sounds clearer and more detailed. Not due to just treble.
8. AKG K240 Studio - pretty good for $100. Would be a decent gaming headphone.
9. AKG K240 Sextett (mine generally sounded awful. Very muffled and never figured out why. Probably a lemon)
 
BTW for some reason my K400 EP is too dark with K702, K601 and Annie pads. Stock pads (with clear screens) sound best.
The LP sounds fine with Q701 pads.

I think they are better than the Vmoda M100, DT-1350, Philips L1 and the Sennheiser Momentum  Very soft, very forgiving.  My absolute favorite portable. That midrange is nothing short of beautiful.

lol, you say that as though most headphones these days aren't over-priced.  
 
(and Momentum is cheaper than K267 *trollface*)

I avoided it because I thought it was just another artist's headphone, more than likely sounding like junk.  I was very wrong.
