REVIEW: HiFiman HM-601

Indeed. Not sure why anyone would pay the $50 premium for an extra 8GB on onboard storage.  The price difference for such a small increment reminds me of the dot.com days when computer/laptop memory was insane.

For the price is a nice HiFi DAP, the NOS DAC is very old and very cheap, but is giving the old school sound that I like. I will look later, I have just received a D7 and allready ordered a LD MKIII. But I keep an eye on this DAP ...

Must be miniature Solid state drives inside these devices :wink:.

To clarify:

1 - I did not notice any sound difference between the "old" HM-601 and the slim version;

2 - In practice, there is no difference in size between the two devices. The new one is a little bit thinner. And nothing else.

3 - The firmware in the slim version is 0.08.

Does it say Slim on it? Did the normal size one look different to the one in the picture? Reason I ask is that my 601 looks identical to the one in the picture

I'm really sorry for asking what I'm sure is a stupid question but I'm getting a bit of a mixed message on this so I want to make sure. The 601 does NOT play 24/96 files, correct? I mean, it plays them but by way of downsampling them to cd resolution? It doesn't actually playback them at 24 bit resolution? Is this correct?

No down-sample , it plays 24/96! from where did you get this idea?

Yes, you can read "slim" in the backplate of the newer device.

The only difference is the backplate itself. See the 3th and 4th picture.

Thanks. Post 391 (and others) was what made me unsure whether the 601 plays 24 bit files without any downsampling etc. Felt like I had to ask.

I thought it did downsample to 16/48 and not play native 24/96. That is at least what I've heard.

Replying to my own post here, sorry. But I got word from Fang himself today. The HM-601 does NOT play 24 bit files, it downsamples them to 16 bit. It does do 96KHz though so technically, if you feed it a 24/96 file it will play it back as 16/96. Case closed.
