How is the bass on the HIFIMAN 601? I like electronic, electro, breaks, metal and rap so I am after the sub bas shaking in my ears. thanks all.

Then you will probably like the HM-601. I think it's bass would be perfect for that kind of music.

Can anyone compare the background blackness levels of the HM601 headphone out unamped to an imod/whipmod/diymod + any $200 amp (with least amount of background noise)? Also have there been any updates to the 601 that allow 24bit audio to be played?

imod should win on background out of HO.  There have not been any updates for 24 bit because it has always played 24 bit.  I don't know why this rumor keeps showing up.

You must be joking...HM-601 has hell a lot of hiss especially when u r using with sensitive IEM. Very annoying. But, now i got used to it. On the 24 bit files, make sure they are stereo and not 5.1.

How bout on the HM602 or 801? Any background hiss there?

I think the HO amp is the same in 601 and 602.
There is a little hiss on the 602 with my Ortofon e-Q7 which is 117dB / 31 Ohms.
If you are going for a HiFiMAN player and want to have as litlle hiss as possible, you would probably be better off with the HM-801 than a 601/602.
As I understand it, they are now selling the 801 with the GAME amp installed, so you don't need to upgrade.
The GAME amp is dedicated to use with sensitive IEMs.

I want to run full sized headphones, like DT770 or D2000, off the portable player. I read a couple reviews stating that the HO on the Hifiman were actually pretty good, but I would really want as little background noise as possible. Would you say a moderately amped imod would have less background noise than the Hifiman 801 HO?

I can only speak of the HiFiMan players. I have never heard an iMod.
If you are thinking in terms of full size headphones, then there is absolutely nothing to worry about in terms of hiss.
Hiss may only appear with very sensitive IEMs.
I have very good SQ with my AKG K-701 directly from the HO - even though the K-701 lacks bass, but that's how it's bass response is.
There is no difference in terms of bass response between the HO of the HiFiMan and the Headstage Arrow (without bass boost) or the M-Stage.

I feel I might be a bit redundant, but would this be for both the HM-801 and HM601?

Would what be for both? The bass response I am talking about is the headphones, not the players.
