Sennheiser 650 comes to mind immediately.

I reckon HD600
bass of 600 is good but not that fat as 650, and its top is shining compared to 701 and 650
right now im using 701 and 650, what i feel is they are not a good couple to fit most kinds of music, so im going to change 650 into 600
701 is my favourite which won't be sold

actually it's easy to find one with the same highs or clarity, but the secret of akg is it's mids. sweet and just the right amount. that is hard to find one similar. the musical and emotional mids are my favourite of akg headphones

since you are looking for sth especially for rock, why don't you try some grados?

for the 880, comparing to 990, they're not bright at all!!!!

The only alternative to the k701 that I'm aware of is the k702.
The hd650 is very nice, but it is almost as far away as you can get from k701 in terms of sound signature.
As far as I know the mk III is an unbuffered tube amp. The k701s really need a good (solid state) output buffer to supply the instantaneous current they need to shine.
They are still a little lighter in the bass department than most headphones. But in my opinion that is just a symptom of being superbly balanced.

That's funny, I went through the opposite purchasing strategy of K701 --> RS-1 for the same reasons.

Have the k701, HD600, and got a MS2 on the way, should get it this Monday. I would definitely say the K701 is my favorite so far, even for allot of rock as I don't mind sacrificing a bit of bass for the supreme clarity provided by the K701's. But do try the HD600, it lacks the shine of the 701's but in return you get more bass. Will report when I get the MS2's.

Btw do you feel having K701 makes you wonder if you have spent too much on rs1?
