Q701 impressions thread

does any one know a bass port modded K702 will have the same bass level as a Q701?
and if a bass port modded Q701 will have the same bass level as an annie?

To my ears the modded Q701 had about the same amount of bass as the K712. The K712 still was a tad fuller sounding, but it's sometimes hard to notice.

Not sure how the modded K702 compares to the modded Q701. I bet it actually sounds worse since the K702 is more open sounding due to the grill.

I tried the bass port mod on my K400 and it just doesn't work out so well..

If you want a headphone that's warmer than the HD-650 try the bass modded Q701 with K712 pads. It's not a good combination!

Also..I bet a stock Q701 + K712 pads (not Annie pads) would sound very similar to the modded Q701 with stock pads.

Too scared to do the mod? Try some K712 pads (with the taller "walls")

Thanks for the reply,

I thought the K712 is even warmer than the Annies.
and I am actually looking for something colder than the Annies but warmer than the DT880.
so I thought the Q701 or the bass port modded K702 might be exactly what I am looking for.

I haven't have a chance to play with any Senn's yet.

Btw, anyone who has the 712 pads know if they decrease the soundstage like the bass port mod? Where can I buy the 712 pads?

You'd have to call/email Frank at AKG parts department.

Last I checked they weren't in stock but they were on order. They're 29USD each.

Part number is 5021871 if you call.

I just don't get it when the Q 701 is called boring. I have not had one boring experience with it. But I have a theory about that. I am thinking some people wear the Q 701 incorrectly. You see, if you place the cups down and forward on the face towards the cheeks, they get a slightly stiff, much less energetic sound. It's night and day because once you have them properly lined up with your ear pinnae, what was once a yawn fest turns into an exhilarating aural bath in clarity and soundstaging that still floors me. Honestly, this is the first headphone that I have bought that I would honestly feel satisfied using until the day I die and I'm dead serious.

^ I must agree on wearing. It makes a huge difference

I really don't get this bumps thing. Could it be that my luxurious head of hair provides cushioning, and this is only a problem for the follically challenged? Just an observation

Same thing here, I've got a lot of thick, voluminous hair and have no problems with the bumps.

On another note, got my Asgard 2 today!  Not sure I like the Q701's more with a solid state amp than with my trusty Dared MP-5, but I've only given it about an hour of listening so it's too early to tell.

We'll see!
