Damn, I'm in for a long ride of re-doing those v0s as Flacs aren't I :p

Oh god, don't get me started.  I have a massive box of CD's in the garage and a HDD full of 128k and V0 MP3's.

(Yes, 128k.  I had the Rio MP3 player, one of (if not THE) first portable MP3 players.  I believe it had 32MB of storage, expandable to 64MB.  MP3 CD's were a much better option at the time, but the skipping!!!)

I ripped about 10-20 of my favorite CD's to FLAC and I've been slacking on the rest.  Going to have to bite the bullet and do it at some point tho...

I used to have a pair of 600 Ohm DT880.
I found they were a more neutral, slightly warmer headphone than the Q701. But I also felt they sounded a bit bland.
I found I preferred the Q701, and after I bass modded the Qs I stopped using my DT880s and sold them.
Some people complain about a treble spike in the DT880, personally it never bothered me but I did prefer using the DTs with a tube amp. Tube amps mitigate the blandness that DT880s can have.
The bass on the DTs was fuller and flatter than the bass on the stock Q701s.
But I found that the DTs had a slightly hollow sounding midrange relative to the Qs.

Bottom line is I kept my Q701 and sold my DT880!

Chart analyzing data from "Rank the Headphones That You Own" show that for folks that have both the Q701 and the Beyer DT 880, nearly all prefer the Q701.

I had a pair of AKG K712s, which I then parted with as part of a trade for AKG 3003i IEMs.

I miss them so much that I am purchasing a pair of AKG Q701s.  Great deal at buysonic.com ($179.95 new).

I realize they have less bass than the AKG K712s (by 3 dB, according to AKG), but the 712 was never one I went to for bass (I have others for that), and I enjoyed their light weight and their precise sound.

Since I drive by a lime green Jeep parked on the street every time I drive downtown, I kept getting reminded of them (I actually had my eye on them prior to buying the AKG K712s, but thought the extra bass of the 712s would be preferable).

So of course I had to get them in lime green.

I have the FiiO E 12 Mont Blanc amp, which puts 880 mW into 32 Ohms.  I also have coming the Sennheiser HDVD 800, for more powerful non-portable use.

They arrive Monday!

You would love the HDVD800, please keep us updated on how the Q701, with its 62ohm impedance pairs with the HDVD800.

anyone her ever tried to take the q701 pads and put theme on the DT880 like this?:

i don't know if that's the right thread, but the 880 thread is kinda dead...

Don't forget, you actually have to fit your head in there too...

  Hi guys,

I'm primarily a competitive gamer and have been using the AD700 with Titanium HD for many years. I've been looking into an upgrade and decided on the Q701.

So far only the aesthetics are an upgrade for me. The headband is too hard and hurts my head. And neither gaming nor music seem better with the Q701. The AD700's just seem clearer, more open and natural. While the Q701 sounds more compressed, and closer to what I'd expect from a closed headphone.

I've read mostly agreement that the TiHD is not enough to power these headphones. But how much of a difference could I expect from adding a magni?

I've read that some people used a razor to slice the bumps off the headband and that improved the comfort. I might be willing to do that if these end up sounding like an all around upgrade from the AD700's.

Alright, so I received my magni today and I can't tell a difference with or without it. There MIGHT be a slight difference but I'm not confident I'd be able to identify with or without in a blind test.

The AD700's just seem much clearer and open and larger sound stage?, while the q701 feels compressed, contained, and muffled in games.

I found an audio track that I feel is really appropriate for testing: m83 - skin of the night. Mp3 v0.

So I'll probably just return the magni and sell the q701.

I did own all those at the same time too. I sold off the rest because the Q701 were the only ones that got head time

Soon i will be like you having all 3 of them once my BH CRACK is here then HD650 is next.My Q701 is driven by LD 1+ the DT880 is with LD MK III and the HD650 will be driven by BH CRACK.
What did you used to drive the 3 Headphones?

I'm surprised about the results. The AD700's may be the better option for you on competitive gaming vs Q701. Sad to hear the Q701 will go...

I don't know what Schiit charges as a restocking fee, but it might be worthwhile to hold on to the Magni as a good, versatile amp for whatever headphone you're listening to.  It'll have problems with volume adjustment on very efficient headphones like the HD25, and to a lesser extent you AD700s, but it'll drive just about anything.  Of course, if you don't need it, you don't need it.

I think the AD700 was a terrific value, and if it's enough for you, you should sell the Q701s.  However, I find it surprising that you find the Q701s compressed and muffled.  You've got me curious enough to do some comparing of my own.  The K/Q701 has been criticized for a number of things, but not for lack of clarity and a small soundstage.  I'll be pulling out my old AD700s now.
