Prog rock

SW is an excellent song writer and has always had superior talent, and his new line up is no exception. SW has a unique talent of pulling in the listener with songs that touch the heart. His music is both cerebral and emotional and he always has a hook or two that draws you into the song. I don't believe his new album will be any different. If you listen to his interviews he obviously has a problem with the label prog rock. The fact that he wants to make his music more accessable doesn't mean that his music will be contrived, trite or boring. He wants more exposure and that's not a bad thing. Shine on Steven and bring it!!

Note that Wilson is signed to an undisclosed "major label". They are going to push him for a more mainstream sound. Further Wilson states the chick from the last album is going to have a "major" role in the new album so the new album may not even sound like a Wilson album. This album has all the hallmarks of a disaster and a sell out like 'And Then There Were Three' by Genesis. Further, reading the article I posted left me thinking Wilson maybe letting his ego get out of hand. Notice how upset Marco Minneman and the guitar player from Raven and HCE were about not even being told both albums went gold. I believe the quote from Marco was Wilson "can shove the gold records up his..."

I stated earlier that I have no problem with Wilson selling out for the fame and money as his back catalog is some of my favorite music. I am a capitalist so more power to him but please do not try to convince me this is a good thing.

I'm not going to try to convince you of anything and whether or not his new album is going to be a disaster remains to be seen. I happen to like Ninet from HCE album so I look forward to her contribution. At this point it's purely speculative the degree to which the new label has artistic control; I can't imagine Wilson sacrificing his integrity for a few more bucks. I agree that SW is a bit full of himself and his handling of the gold record situation with Marco and Guthrie was irritating, but we have yet to hear from Guthrie or Steven on the matter. I guess we'll just have to wait for more snippets to emerge before we judge the direction of his new music. If he lets his band play to their potential I'll be satisfied.

My love for Steven Wilson's solo work, Porcupine Tree and his remixes knows no bounds. Heck I once spent $50 to get the DVD-A for 'In Absentia' just for a couple of extra songs and 16/48 resolution. I agree I am just speculating and I truly hope and pray I am wrong.

Holy Schiit!

I paid the same amount for 'In Absentia', and for the same freaking reason!

Hehe. Thank you you make me feel better.

I have never compromised on my entire music catalog. If there is a better master or higher resolution I own it.

The only PT albums I have at 16/44 are Signify and earlier albums. In Abstentia at 16/48, Stupid Dream through FOABP at 24/48 and The Incident at 24/96. Same with his solo work except I ditched my 24/48 of Insurgentes because last year Wilson remastered it but only at 16/44.

Bring it!

Continuing my recommendation of overlooked albums. If any here love Riverside you need to check out two excellent albums by their leader, bass player and vocalist Mariusz Duda.

First his solo project Lunatic Soul especially the first album 'Lunatic Soul'

Second, Indukti's 'S.U.S.A.R.' A Polish band Mariusz played on their first album. Spectacular!

Just out of curiosity, any who have Spotify or Tidel is Indukti's album is even available.

Getting more and more into Riverside! Years ago, when my nephew was 17 or so, I got him into Genesis, Rush, Yes, Crimson etc. He then got me into Muse (maybe not progressive, but I like some of their stuff - and their concerts are awesome) and then PT and SW. He is now 24 years old, and last year introduced me Riverside. I'm pretty sure that he recently said that Riverside is almost topping PT/SW as his favorite band, so they have meaning lol!

Anyway, thanks also to you (and to answer your question), I am now listening to Indukti's album Idmen on Tidal. Pretty friggin' great to be sure! I'll be sure to inform my nephew :-)

p.s./edit: I see that Idmen is Indukti's 3rd or 4th album and that S.U.S.A.R. is their debut album. Tidal only has Idmen.

p.p.s.edit: I see that Mariusz didn't even play on the album (Idmen) that I'm listening too. D'oh! Oh well, it's still pretty friggin' good lol!

I wish I had the equipment or ears do distinguish between 320K and higher, but I've done some A/B/X and blind tests with classical and rock and I hear no difference between 320K and FLAC, so in this era of streaming, a Google Play Music subscription is enough for me, and I have some 100 CD collection from back before streaming. But I regret I sold my entire vinyl collection along with my turntable in the early 00's...
Listening now to Aqualung (SW Mix) and comparing with the old CD there is a huge difference even in 320K so the mastering matters a lot more than a difference between 320K, FLAC, or HiRes that I don't hear.

Interesting article from Steven Wilson himself on this issue: https://www.google.com/amp/www.digitaltrends.com/features/interview-steven-wilson-on-high-res-hand-cannot-erase/amp/?client=safari
I cannot agree more with you that the resolution is far less important than the master hence why I ditched a 24/48 for a 16/44 because it was a far better master.

I cannot recommend S.U.S.A.R. enough hunt down a copy it will be worth it. The prominent use of a harp in the album is breathtaking.

Another related album came out last December Meller Gołyźniak Duda's 'Breaking Habits'. Yes, that is Mariusz Duda.

Great article, thanks!
I now understood what a flat transfer means.
Interesting read about Aqualung too.

Good points:
S. Wilson: "One thing that shouldn’t be understated is that there is a psychological aspect to this. If you know you are listening to high-resolution files, there’s something quite comforting about it, you know? That’s also important. There’s information in those tracks that’s missing when you listen to a CD. Whether you can hear it or not, it is quite comforting to know that it is there.

I know we’ve talked about this before, but I think it’s worth saying again that all of this high-resolution stuff is pointless if the mastering sucks. Bad mastering is more of a problem than things being released at CD resolution, or even MP3s. What’s nice about this move to 96/24 is the amount of things that are coming out in flat transfers — no compression, and no mastering engineers ******* up the sound. That is a very, very good development in the history of music."

Pretty good album. Simple, melodic, nothing groundbreaking but enjoyable with a bit of 80's arena flavour.
