More news about Steven Wilson's upcoming solo album. https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/upcoming_releases/steven_wilson_what_to_expect_from_my_new_album.html

"...but it's a little more song-based, a little more contemporary-sounding". I am listening to 'The Raven That Refused To Sing' in 96/24 while typing this and sobbing uncontrollably.

Like Opeth, I am good with following Wilson in any musical direction he feels inspired to go. Whatever style of music he plays I have confidence the talent and love of music will be with him and I am excited to see what he does next. Raven is an excellent album, but he has already made it once and we don't need to see him to the same thing again and again. He is the artist, I am just the listening.

Unlike you I love music, not just prog music. I enjoy a wide variety of styles and can go whatever direction he leads.

Apostate. Progressive music is such a wide spectrum that your statement betrays an ignorance of the genre. I love symphonic, metal, neo, crossover prog and RPI to name five subgroups.

I love music performed with the complexity and subtlety that is the hallmark of progressive instead of the mind numbing 4/4 sludge of contemporary or pop music.

There is some very good "pop" music out there. Can't run a whole genre of music out the window like that, it betrays an ignorance of the genre....

I totally agree! HCE is an absolute masterpiece, IMHO. Life for me has gotten so much better now that I'm no longer a purist. Heck, I even have some Taylor Swift on rotation in my collection.

If I want the same album over and over and over, I'll go back to listening to Pink Floyd :p

(Don't worry Spook. We do respect your opinions- keep 'em coming!)

Dudes! This is the coolest thread on Head-Fi. Do we really want to here? Really?

You are all apostates! Never fear I will remain the progressive purist and weather the slings and arrows. :-).

Is it just me but is 2017 new album releases looking a little light? Other than Dave Kerzner in late April and Lunatic Soul and Steven Wilson in September I do not see much on the horizon.

Uh, I thought he was joking...so I poked back. Sorry if I offended Spook, I was trying to play along:)

You did not offend me. I am no millennial. I thought it was funny. My progressive master Jim who has 6,000+ progressive albums is really excited by the new Wilson. He has tried unsuccessfully to force the Wilson remixes of XTC down my throat. His comment about the new album is "Freaking XTC!!!"

Hehe Bavinck and I are friends. But I agree that this is the best thread here on Head-Fi and your protective concern is appreciated.

I feel like I now have license to be a jack-ass, and still be a nice guy!

Bring it!

Continuing my recommendation of overlooked albums. If any here love Riverside you need to check out two excellent albums by their leader, bass player and vocalist Mariusz Duda.

First his solo project Lunatic Soul especially the first album 'Lunatic Soul'

Second, Indukti's 'S.U.S.A.R.' A Polish band Mariusz played on their first album. Spectacular!

Just out of curiosity, any who have Spotify or Tidel is Indukti's album is even available.

+100

As much as I love prog, I cannot listen to more than a few albums in a row, and if I do, I found that sometimes it changes my mood drastically. Like with everything else, I need balance in music listening. Because prog can be so complex, I need to periodically reset my brain with easier, enjoyable music of various genres, and then come refreshed for a new prog journey.

I'm actually curious about the new SW album and I'd like to be surprised by something different.

SW is an excellent song writer and has always had superior talent, and his new line up is no exception. SW has a unique talent of pulling in the listener with songs that touch the heart. His music is both cerebral and emotional and he always has a hook or two that draws you into the song. I don't believe his new album will be any different. If you listen to his interviews he obviously has a problem with the label prog rock. The fact that he wants to make his music more accessable doesn't mean that his music will be contrived, trite or boring. He wants more exposure and that's not a bad thing. Shine on Steven and bring it!!

Note that Wilson is signed to an undisclosed "major label". They are going to push him for a more mainstream sound. Further Wilson states the chick from the last album is going to have a "major" role in the new album so the new album may not even sound like a Wilson album. This album has all the hallmarks of a disaster and a sell out like 'And Then There Were Three' by Genesis. Further, reading the article I posted left me thinking Wilson maybe letting his ego get out of hand. Notice how upset Marco Minneman and the guitar player from Raven and HCE were about not even being told both albums went gold. I believe the quote from Marco was Wilson "can shove the gold records up his..."

I stated earlier that I have no problem with Wilson selling out for the fame and money as his back catalog is some of my favorite music. I am a capitalist so more power to him but please do not try to convince me this is a good thing.
