In 2008 the entire classic era Genesis was remastered in SACD. Unfortunately, one look at Steve Hoffman forums, the Dynamic Range Database http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/list?artist=Genesis&album=Lamb+ and my ears they were overcompressed garbage.

The dream is a Steven Wilson 96/24 remix https://m.facebook.com/Steven-Wilson-must-remix-Genesis-1537117056523048/ but Tony Banks controls the masters and seems to be unwilling.

The best masters to my ears is the 2013 Japanese remasters of 'Trespass' through 'Wind & Wuthering' all in 16/44.1 CD.

I have the Japanese remasters of "Trespass" through "Selling England...". Just ordered "Lamb...". Thanks for the backstory - hope Steven Wilson gets a shot at it.

I love a wide palette of progressive music but over the almost 50 years (I start from the release of King Crimson's 'Court of The Crimson King' in 1969) no band has come close to Genesis. To me they are the Beethoven of progressive music.

For those still doubting the genius of Steven Wilson, get a copy of Opeth's 'Watershed Special Edition'. Wilson mastered the entire album but the record company subsequently compressed and downsampled the album to 16/44.1. However in the Special Edition, the additional three tracks are a flat transfer in 16/48 and what a difference.

Huge departure for SW assuming the rest of the song carries on in the same vein. - so far so good.

I like it also but the brief demo reminds me of 'Grace For Drowning' and especially "Raider II".

Sorry, I don't hear it that way. Grace has a different chord structure with the piano introduction and Raider II has a forebodding vibe to it - very dark. To the bone is upbeat with the harp and conga, yes, CONGA), go figure. The harp player has the same phrasing as Robert Plant. The intro is very upbeat, however the guitar notes are a bit foreboding (maybe this what you're hearing). There's no way that SW writes an upbeat song, unless he's running a fever. lol - something tells me the mood will change.

Well remember the founder of Wilson's favorite band, XTC, cowrote two of the songs. Steven Wilson is moving in a more pop direction that was clear from 'Hand.Cannot.Erase'. I did not really enjoy HCE and I will probably dislike the new album. However, he is still the greatest progressive musician and engineer of the modern age and I hope the new album is a huge commercial success.

"...but it's a little more song-based, a little more contemporary-sounding". I am listening to 'The Raven That Refused To Sing' in 96/24 while typing this and sobbing uncontrollably.

Like Opeth, I am good with following Wilson in any musical direction he feels inspired to go. Whatever style of music he plays I have confidence the talent and love of music will be with him and I am excited to see what he does next. Raven is an excellent album, but he has already made it once and we don't need to see him to the same thing again and again. He is the artist, I am just the listening.

Unlike you I love music, not just prog music. I enjoy a wide variety of styles and can go whatever direction he leads.
