SW is an excellent song writer and has always had superior talent, and his new line up is no exception. SW has a unique talent of pulling in the listener with songs that touch the heart. His music is both cerebral and emotional and he always has a hook or two that draws you into the song. I don't believe his new album will be any different. If you listen to his interviews he obviously has a problem with the label prog rock. The fact that he wants to make his music more accessable doesn't mean that his music will be contrived, trite or boring. He wants more exposure and that's not a bad thing. Shine on Steven and bring it!!
Note that Wilson is signed to an undisclosed "major label". They are going to push him for a more mainstream sound. Further Wilson states the chick from the last album is going to have a "major" role in the new album so the new album may not even sound like a Wilson album. This album has all the hallmarks of a disaster and a sell out like 'And Then There Were Three' by Genesis. Further, reading the article I posted left me thinking Wilson maybe letting his ego get out of hand. Notice how upset Marco Minneman and the guitar player from Raven and HCE were about not even being told both albums went gold. I believe the quote from Marco was Wilson "can shove the gold records up his..."
I stated earlier that I have no problem with Wilson selling out for the fame and money as his back catalog is some of my favorite music. I am a capitalist so more power to him but please do not try to convince me this is a good thing.
I'm not going to try to convince you of anything and whether or not his new album is going to be a disaster remains to be seen. I happen to like Ninet from HCE album so I look forward to her contribution. At this point it's purely speculative the degree to which the new label has artistic control; I can't imagine Wilson sacrificing his integrity for a few more bucks. I agree that SW is a bit full of himself and his handling of the gold record situation with Marco and Guthrie was irritating, but we have yet to hear from Guthrie or Steven on the matter. I guess we'll just have to wait for more snippets to emerge before we judge the direction of his new music. If he lets his band play to their potential I'll be satisfied.
