I know a buyer for a major retailer in the US who lives near HK, he buys lots of electronics and other stuff.
The Chinese even do knock off cars where they steal the designs from the competition and beat them into production with a look alike.
The knock off products in China are to be avoided, which is why Chinese with money will only buy at the factory store and are willing to pay full list to get a real product. It's more than snob appeal.
The knock offs typically have to hit a cost basis of 1/20th of the real products, so they must be taking something out.
Someone knowledgeable in fasteners told me that 40-60% of every batch of "rated bolts" from China fail when they test them, the problem is so bad they now test 100% of every bolt shipment their customers order from Chinese suppliers because they are cheap, a true statement. I can't wait until the knock-off aircraft bolts make their way into the commercial jet fleets.
The buyer has purchased some knock off product that looked OK to him, they failed in a month or two.
To their credit, the Chinese are now worried about protecting their countries brand name since they poisoned everyone's dogs and babies with poisoned milk and lead paint toys, so they are making some effort to clean their act up. They still have a long way to go.
Only purchase using a credit card so you can claw back the money if the product is fake, also ask the vendor in writing (e-mail) who manufactured the product.
You may piss them off, but if they know they are selling knock offs you can then take your case not only to the credit card company but also to the Postal Inspectors (USA); who take a dim view as being used as a vehicle for a fraud, The inspectors can seize a business, its books and bank accounts based on suspicion of an ongoing fraud or criminal enterprise. The word Postal Inspectors strikes fear into the hearts of even the slimiest vendors, typically they will roll over the second you mention the Inspectors. Game over.
After the business, inventory, building, books and bank accounts are seized and possibly the assets of the owners, the case can take years to work through the courts.
The commerce sites will also take action if you report a problem, Amazon is quite good about this, e-bay also watches this closely from my experiences.
AKG reports that fakes are finding their way even into their own dealers.
With all the press the 702s are getting, I'm sure the fakes are in the pipeline if not on the street.
Buyer be ware.

Any updates on the K702's? I found some Chinese "Wholesalers" that have some ridiculously good prices on some pretty popular phones. One of them even admits that some of the phones are made by the Sennheiser OEM factory. Could these be "third shift" products where they simply make the same stuff but sell it cheap?
I'd love to know what the SQ differences are, because if the fakes sound ok, does it matter if they are fake?
