Yeah I would have thought so too...
I can turn up the volume full with NO distortion through the Grados.
It's much louder with my IEMs.
I think the Grados, while easy to drive, require some voltage to play loud.
The Shadow might not put out enough current to really drive loud. That being said the SQ is great especially the detail, separation and stage.
I was just surprised that I sometime need more volume and the Shadow is maxed out.
I am sure it is better for me not to go any louder anyway!

+2 i was going to say my 80's are loud just out my ipod etc more so with my T3 and arrow dont see why that would happen with the shadow.
