Sounds like a good candidate for Rockbox (if possible). 

It is just a bit smaller and thinner then the clip/clip+, however functionally it is a failure.  It does not resume from pause after power down for example.  I got it because it is cheap and fits in a meelec case with a pair of IEM's.  Right now on Newegg it is only $17.99 for 4GB

EDIT: There's a pair of these in my future. They're at a good price point, look AMAZING. And apparently sound good too.
