That looks amazing, fallingreason. How does it sound with the different effects? What are your favorite EQ settings on the famed Cowon EQ? Do you use Mach3bass? What codec and bitrate music do you have on it?

Most of my music is either V0 or 320kbps MP3 files, but I have a few FLAC albums here and there. (usually jazz or classical)

I actually just got the J3 and have been experimenting with it.  The J3 is one of the first players I really do not find pleasing to listen to with all effects off and EQ flat.

I find that BBE+ makes some mp3 albums sound richer, but not all, so I have 2 user EQ's that are identical, except one has BBE @ 4/10 and one has it @ 0/10.  I do always use Mach3bass right now because the J3 has a much leaner sound than the Sony X I had been using prior to the J3.  However, Mach3bass is totally different than Clearbass on Sony's and the bass slider on Samsungs, I'm still trying to figure it out...

So far I've been using my custom EQ with Mach3bass @ 6/10, and the EQ as 5-2-0-2-5 Level, 80-385-780-4.1-13 Hz, Wide-Wide-Narrow-Wide-Wide, and BBE either on or off @ 4/10.  This will probably change though...

I also enjoy the BBE Mach3Bass preset EQ,

That is good to hear. Don't be afraid to experiment with the EQ a little bit and get out the V or smiley face a little bit. I have the Nationite S:Flo2, and while it does not have an EQ as good as the Cowon's, it works pretty well. I use to run it at 10-6-0-5-8, now I usually have the low mid (the second band) flat or only mildly boosted and the highs a little down from that. I find you get better bass by not putting the low mid slider up any or even putting it negative (not too much though, as this causes a lot of instruments to sound recessed). Right now I have it at 10-1-0-3-5. Note that because my player does not have any bass boost feature, I have the bass to 10.
I also have an Iriver H120, with RockBox on it. I have not experimented with it so far, except for making the first band 60hz and the second band 110hz, which is low bass and midbass, and boosting them by a few decibels.

Yeah portable headphones are underappreciated here, I prefer on-ear or over-ear during winters, warmer ears and IEM ear tips are cold outdoors or don't make a good fit during cold weather. Maybe my ears shrink a lot

You don't see a lot of full-sized phones in this thread in general, so it's nice to see something else besides IEMs in here, I guess. As for FOTM, who can say? I know they're my favorite closed phones so far (compared to DT770, HD25-1, HFI-780, T50p, etc).

I tried portable headphones and they aren't for me. I can't throw them in my pocket and forget about them all day and I can't lean my head against things when lying down/on some form of transport.

Here is my Cowon D2+ & Phonak Audéo Perfect Bass Earphones. The sound quality is very good.

Days are getting colder, so I've been mostly using my jacket-pocket-able player and my ear-warmer phones. Nothing beats matte black combined with matte black, 'murdered out' as the kids say. Yeh, it sounds as good as it looks.
