Still, I suspect that adding rings of various inner diameters, made of felt or other materials, will likely become a popular (and very easy) way to mod the PM-2.
Mike
Mike, I took those words to heart.....after removing the felt rings from my velour PM-1 pads, and installing the rings in my PM-2 to give a listen. That didn't work at all, compressed the soundstage and openness of the PM-2, and muffled the bass. That was the same effect that the velour pads had on the PM-1 with the felt rings in.
Then, I started thinking about your idea above. I cut some Creatology foam rings the same size as the rings that were removed from the velour rings. I tried the Cretology rings in the PM-2 pads, and I was dissatisfied with the sound....soundstage and bass response suffered. Next I took the Creatology foam rings and I put them in the velour PM-1 pads. Still testing that combo, but initial impressions are very positive, I just invented a PM-2 velour pads that........opened up the PM-2's with a very big soundstage, lots of air and sparkle, while retaining (maybe improving) the bass response. With the velour modded pads on my PM-2, I did not get the negative response they had in their stock form on both the PM-1 or PM-2, which was a muffled/veiled sound. With the velour modded pads on my PM-2, I now have the comfort of velour, and I always have liked the frequency response I got on my other headphones, all with using velour. This modd really puts the PM-2 in the positive column for me. This may have a lot to do with my current setup, but I can say the shouty male and female vocals I experienced earlier are gone with these velour modded pads. I have confirmed the effect holds with my aftermarket cables as well, although with the cable changes I do hear slight positive differences in sound as well.
I sure wish Oppo would hurry with offereing other ear pads as an accessory, as it is proven that their headphones can be tuned. That would open up a lot of options for tuning these headphones by the individual users, as each has different gears and ears!
