Actually it's rather easy to do that. Lower the diaphragm tension, use cheaper magnets, cheaper housing materials, different metals, different substrates, etc. HiFiMAN did this to the HE-6 to make the HE-500.

I've cleaned up most of it. I'm not certain if that was worth discussing here either though. Not to say it wasn't an interesting topic, but there are other more suitable threads for that discussion to carry on.
