You could, but that would degrade sound quality a bit. Then the regular TRRS to TRS adapter AK style was going for 60-70 a piece. I can see things more specific would cost even more. Then yeah, best to buy another cable just like you said .

"you can only go from trrs to trs not the other direction as any trs stereo cannot go to balanced because of grounds in trs being connected."
This confirmed by Ted

Can you put an example for mid tier DAP? Is DP-X1 SE better than DX80 or Fiio X5II?

Yes :) or more specifically for the price of the iBasso and FiiO, I would go for the lotoo paw 5000. For a little more I would go for the soundaware Esther which to my ears, sounds **** awesome. Yes I like the Esther more than the ak380 to my ears it is more detailed. Dynamic and musical than the 380 :p subjectively of course. From the onkyo's balanced though, I think it pretty much codes the gap from these top tier daps to a large extent, possibly surpassing them even but that I can't say because I haven't done a proper comparison. But it brings it close enough in sound quality, with an excellent UI, build quality, and screen so I think that makes it excellent value did you go balanced.

Hi all, I got just got my set 2 days back, had been trying out the player before I make any comments.

I moved on to the DP X1 from a DX90J/Graham Slee Voyage stack, and I'm using Heir Audio 8A CIEMs. I also have a pair of UE SuperFi.5 EBs.

First off, I've been using this thing for quite intensively and trying out all types of formats, e.g. APE, MP3, FLAC, DSF, WAV.

I have yet to hang my player. I've tested most if not all scenarios as well, for example playback with DSP, upsampling enabled etc etc. Also, I just updated my player today, so will see if I can get my player to hang!

I'm going to get a balanced cable today or tomorrow, so I can't yet comment on the Balanced output, so my comments on SQ will solely be based on SE A.C.G mode.

I'm no audio guru, so I'll keep it simple. If you guys have any questions, feel free to ask specifics. I don't do any technical tests though!

I've tested Sony ZX2 because I had wanted to buy it just before the DP X1. I tested the ZX2 with no Sony enhancements on, and I immediately thought that the bass was a little too much for my liking. Maybe it is the synergy with my 8As, though.

With the DP X1 SE, first off, the bass is just nice, not too much, not too little. Just enough extension, and sounds very accurate.
The separation for instruments are phenomenal in my opinion though. Sound stage is quite wide as well. I really enjoy listening to guitar strings on this thing; it sounds beautiful!

I test with a wide genre of music, and I have yet to find a specific genre which doesn't sound pleasing to me. Of course, I will keep testing, add more comments in regards to the balanced output as well.

P.S. The build quality is stunning. Feels great and yet lightweight. The plastic/glass strip on the back is a pain though, it is such a finger print magnet. One thing to note, the micro sd slots sound very hollow when you insert a micro sd card. Not really a problem, just that I found it quite wierd. :/

So now after the update, I get this screen when I power on the device. Previously this screen doesn't appear.
The temperature of the device also warms up when doing this, though now after 15 minutes of listening, the temperature is back to normal.

Glad to hear that another one finds the DP-X1 has great synergy with the 8A. Honestly, I seldom use the 8A ( fat bass, thick mid, sweet upper mid with smooth silky treble and at times feel it is congested) for more than a year after I had my VE6. But this DAP has certainly opened up the 8A and both operate to deliver at its best and to my expectation of how I prefer my music to be heard on SE mode.
I also observed the sweet spot for DP-X1 on SE mode is between volume 140-155. I have a pad that's enable me to scale up. The sonic up there is really good across the audio spectrum and increase exponentially to volume. IMO, the amp section is very linear with no signal degradation based on my gears and accessories.

It is android SOP to optimise apps after system update.

Nice, I don't meet a lot of 8A users in my part of the world. Wow, 140-160? What gain setting do you use? On high I use 80.
