Does anyone know the difference between fed ex and ems from pricejapan (other than cost of course)? Their site recommends ems...thx

I know 2 things :

1. EMS uses the postal system in the destination country, and therefore depending on your country can be     excellent, awful, or impossible (not all countries, or areas
within countries, can be accessed by EMS).  Fedex of course uses its own delivery logistics.

2.  From Japan, Fedex is usually stupidly expensive.

Honestly I do not know the difference, but what I DO know is that most foreign businesses that ship overseas prefer EMS. I have purchased many things from overseas and the items have always come via. EMS. EMS may be slightly slower (in general) than Fedex, but I have always had good experiences with them. Also, as you can most likely tell, EMS is by far the cheapest shipping option when it comes to shipping to / from foreign countries.

Edit: Also just so everyone knows, the Onkyo DPA-PUX1 (slim leather case) is now available as an "add-on" item for the DP-X1 on PriceJapan. It only costs an extra 4,290 yen ($36 USD).

Also fedex and UPS cost more and will most likely charge additional customs fees. EMS not so much.

Agreed! And I believe that EMS generally costs less because as @Dopaminer said, they utilize the destination countries shipping service. Like for me, in the US, they use the USPS once the package arrives in the country. Likewise, I assume that when I ship to foreign places via. USPS they also use EMS when the package is leaving the country.

Also, has anyone been in contact with PriceJapan about the Van Nuys case for the DP-X1 / XDP-100R? I feel like it would make another great "add-on" item.

Edit: $629 HKD ($82 USD / 9676 yen) for the Van Nuys case seems a bit expensive, but it has so many accessories and options.

I've mailed to Kaneda-san today and he said PriceJapan have a dispute on some issue with Fedex. He also told me he will consider the fastest way to ship my unit, if he ship by EMS he will refund me for FedEx cost I paid previously.

To add on, the Onkyo DPA-PUX1 is not available yet and will only be available in mid-Jan (according to Kaneda, he estimates it to be ~20 Jan)
Also, I believe someone has contacted Kaneda on the Van Nuys case a few pages back (refer to post #2540), he said that the waiting time would be about a month for this case.

Do take note if you opt for these add-ons, your DP-X1 order will be delayed until these add-ons become available (unless you pay extra to have separate shipping)

That was me!

Here's an excerpt of my email with Kaneda-san:
Between myself and Kaneda:
"Q. Van Nuys VD-280-00 ...

A. By past experience, VAN Nuys products may need one month to be shipped.
If you want together shipping of DP-X1 and VAN Nuys case ( it may need one month), please send US$60 to our paypal account, info[at]pricejapan.com
If you want separate shipping If you want together shipping of DP-X1 and VAN Nuys case, please send US$94 to our paypal account, info[at]pricejapan.com"

I too bought my Onkyo DP-X1 with screen protector and leather case together on PriceJapan.com, but I used FedEx shipping. Contacting Kaneda-san on whether this has affected my shipping/delivery, and if I can get it sooner via EMS I'll ask him to amend (and partial refund) my order...or I could get the Van Nuys case but it seems too much excess...hmm

I didn't get around to replying to other poster's but glad others have ;)

In my opinion, if you have solely DSD files, or relish/listen to DSD/DXD, then of course native conversion will be a priority.
HOWEVER, DSD to PCM is NOT bad if implemented well, and we are talking about a DAP under £/$1K here.
The vast majority of my music is in Redbook 16 bit/44.1 kHz CD quality FLAC/ALAC/Apple Lossless rips or downloads. I do have some high resolution 24 bit files in 48 kHz, 88.2 kHz, 96 kHz and 192 kHz (no 176.4 kHz files). I also have extremely little DSD/DXD files, mainly test tracks and some albums from Blue Coast Records.
Just because I don't have DSD records doesn't mean that I won't be using the Onkyo DP-X1 to it's full potential. I will, with music I enjoy and available (mainly Redbook), knowing I have a well implemented sources instrument ^^

I think the balanced cables has been well explained by previous Head-Fi'ers (thanks @Dopaminer!); try Double Helix Cables, Moon Audio, ALO, WyWires, Nordost, etc.

It seems as though DP-X1 orders in general have been pushed back to around January 15th anyways. So adding on the case would only push the shipping date back an extra 5 days or so? That isn't too bad if you ask me!

After using the DP-X1 for several weeks, I very much like the player with some caveats.  For one, the battery life when streaming is tops 3.5 hours.  Not sure if this is typical on a DAP, as not many are capable of steaming, but 3.5 hours just isn't enough.  I have to keep a portable charger with me.  Another gripe...why did they embed the audio options into the stock player?  Equalizer and other settings only apply to the stock player, nothing else.  If I want to tweak the equalizer settings for any streaming service, can't do it.   I like the way Sony has their equalizer and other options in the unit's settings, so they work for any streaming service.  After the firmware update, as I've seen in the forum with some other's, every time I power on the unit, it goes through 5 minutes of "optimizing apps", really?.  Plus my 5GHz network is no longer visible (I only see one other person in the forum in the same boat on this, same router so maybe some weird issue with that).  Also after the update, audio occasionally stops, and I need to unplug the headset and plug it back in to fix.  As  others have said, lack of browsing by "folders" on the stock player is just dumb.  Hopefully Onkyo fixes this with an update.  The volume wheel is nice, but I don't like that when you use it, there is a several second lag before you can do anything else.  If I want to change the volume, then change tracks, albums, or whatever, the screen is greyed out for several seconds, can't do anything. That's annoying.

On the plus side, the operating system is fluid and fast.  Even when streaming, tracks change quickly, which was a pleasant surprise.  As for the amp, volume on high gain is way more than enough to drive my headphones even on the most demanding tracks (note that Grado's don't take much to drive though).  I thought the size of the player might bother me, I'm not a fan of over-sized phones, but it's not as large as I expected.  Fits fine in my hand.

I purchased the player on Ebay, shipped from Japan to US in less than a week, which I thought was crazy fast.  You do pay a premium for this.  Seller asked what amount I wanted to use for shipping, I said full amount.  I wasn't charged any duties though.

Just out of curiosity what are most DP-X1 owners using as their "setup" / what is your ideal setup with the DP-X1? I know a lot of people are excited about using the DP-X1 with the Chord Mojo, but personally I do not think an extra DAC in the Mojo is needed as the DAC setup on the DP-X1 seems really good as it is. It seems like the DP-X1 is really just lacking a really good amplifier component.

My ideal DP-X1 setup would either be to pair the DP-X1 with a fully balanced, portable amp, like the Ray Samuels SR-71B, ALO RX3_B, or maybe even my CEntrance Mini-M8 although I bet the DAC in the DP-X1 is superior to that of the Mini-M8.

In order to use the balanced out from the Onkyo DAP I bought balanced cables for my EU customs and my Oppo PM -3.

The downside is that this is the only balanced source I have and sometimes I would like to switch to an unbalanced source.
Switching the cables is a big pain, specially for the customs, that I feel I may brake if I have to switch the cable one more time.

I looked for an adapter to accomplish this without changing the cable, but they all seen to be $55 and up.
After buying the DAP, headphones and cables I am officially broke. Does any of you have a cheaper solution for this type of challenge?

the only other way is to do what Moon Audio does...   they will create a cable that has a mini XLR connector so the headphone cable can be converted by simply plugging in a different end...

but its probably more than the $55 for a single adapter...

There is an amp that, via balanced 2.5 mm TRRS or USB, can beef up the sound...ALO Continental Dual Mono!

Alternatively there's the impressive and well priced RAL KEB02AK Balanced Headphone Amplifier, or it's alternative RAL KEB02iP DAC Headphone Amplifier.

And there are many non DAC amps too, like Cavalli Audio's new portable one, FiiO range, JDSLabs, HeadAmp, ALO Rx, Vorzüge VorzAMP range, Ray Samuels, so on and so forth.

Null audio has this adapter for cheaper.
