ok... I've amended the thread title for you Flasken...

I won't make it a sticky thread though, it seems to be bouncing around at the top quite nicely all by itself...

I was tempted to work out the averages of all the answers, and post THEM in an updateable sticky... trouble is, if there are lets say 100 HD600 votes and 10 R10 votes... would the averages be fair??????

Would be interesting to see your thoughts... if they work out for the best, its only a bit of maths for me to suss it all out

Thanks

Averaging the results would be silly. If the best phone you've heard is the V6, you'll give the V6 a 10. It's silly to average that with the 2 that I gave it because I'd heard so much better.

I agree with Kelly. Averaging the ratings would actually diminish their importance since in each case they are relative to an individual's overall experience. Personally, taken as a whole, I would put much greater faith in these raw ratings than I ever would the lengthy reviews in the permanent area.

One further refinement that may merit consideration is a more standardized rating system. I would suggest that we rate our highest listed phone as a "10" and all others somewhere below that.

Simply rating a phone an "8" means little if it is the highest rating in your list. We need to know that the phone is rated an "8" relative to something. Using the 10-point system, an "8" in a list which includes an Orpheus means a great deal more than the same rating in a list where the V6 rates a "10."

I personally agree with you Kelly & Spad...

But, i'm just wondering if there really is any way to condense this thread down so as to have a who's who of the headphone world (according to our ears)

Maybe having ranges???

I.E.

Sony MDR-V6 4.2-6.5
Sony MDR-R10 8.8-9.8
etc etc.

What d'ya think??

Since all the rating are entirely subjective, what would this really tell us? Other than deleting posts that don't include ratings, I don't see how the thread can be pared down without destroying its usefulness.

The idea of ranges seems to take us back to the implied question, 4.2 - 6.5 compared to what?

Maybe what is needed is an entirely new ratings area entitled Quick Reviews or some such. As in others such as "Gear For Sale," it could begin with a sticky note stating "this is not a forum" in order to keep the chaff down.

Duncan, Spad,

I think the thread is optimal as it is. Most of the great information here would be lost if the thread was compressed, and if it was made a "short review thread", it would also lose some of its great comparative simplicity.

And for the record, I'm not trying to "defend" this thread or anything... Merely stating what seems obvious to me.

cheers

I can't contribute much data to this thread, but I'm feeling pretty good that my ER4p/META combo seems to be pretty high up the lists.

The suggestions to put these ratings on some common scale are interesting, but couldn't really work.....people just rate things differently. I have one suggestion, however. How about a graph/scatterplot of rating vs price? It would be interesting to see how this works out, we miight see some interesting surprises and clusterings in price/performance. My suspicion is that for the ratings that include really GREAT stuff, we'll find that some gear gets you up to ~8 ratings without insufferable wallet pain, but then the shape of the curve flattens out a lot, ie, you have to spend a whole lot more for that last little bit. I'm sure everyone realizes that (all to well!) already, but it would be fun to see how it works out in more detail.

If people who have posted ratings will also provide approximate price info, I'll even try to make such a plot....

difficult one this as my regular phones are all used with their own
specific setup.

But I suppose taking 5 as the basic good sound I would categorize the phones thus:

Stax 4040 system 8

Beyer 931s 7

Stax 001s 7

senn hd 25s 6

wharfdale isos 6

yam hp2s 5

I expect If I thought harder I could add 0. this or that to each
rating so this is just a blanket average really.

And my own phones?..........10 of course
