Wow!! I'm absent for 1 day and half of head-fi posts here! A great read, thanks guys. - This sort of put most of the opinions I've read here in context.

(and no, I don't think we've done this before. Perhaps before I got here, but since then the member count has quadrupled)

I'm reminded of one of my favorite lines from This is Spinal Tap, uttered by a confused Nigel:

"This one goes to eleven"

Thanks Jude for posting your opinion re) the 340's

OK...here goes:

AKG K340: 8.5
Grado SR225: 7 (with the correct amplification)
AKG K501: 7
AKG K240M: 6.5 (but like a comfortable pair of slippers)

I've heard enough of others to know that there is better out there. Oh well, sorry about my wallet.

Thanks for a great thread, Flasken.

Does anyone else think this thread, or something similar, should be made sticky? Personally, I think it may be among most valuable on Head-Fi. When reading member comments on phones I haven't heard, knowing how they rate other phones could be very useful. At the very least, it would put those comments in perspective.

I wonder too, if it could be made more useful if members listed only the phones they currently own, since comparisons from memory or those based on brief, less than ideal auditions can be so misleading. All too often, such impressions miss the mark by a wide margin, or so they do in my case. If such brief or remembered experiences are to be included, perhaps those could be set off in some manner.

I think this should be made THE sticky!!!!

Perhaps they could edit and update their sections as they get new phones, and create their own little works of art for this thread. If they list headphones they don't own, perhaps people could edit to indicate the phones they actually own.

Just some suggestions.

joe - have you never owned a pair of 580/600's? or do you just currently not have any now.. I'd be interested to see where in your massive list of headphones the 600's would end up =D

BTW - I think joe's method of rating amp+hp combo is great! especially for those of us who have many different combinations.. (very much not me

... And still, it's surprisingly interesting to read these lists. Ah!! It feels like a review without the unbearable "it depends".

Great read guys, and yes, it SHOULD be made sticky. (if it will be, I'll add a disclaimer in the first post explaining how everything should be taken with a truckload of salt etc..)

BTW, will a mod please correct the typo in the title?
