Could anyone confirm that if 64/128GB CF card fits 5.5th 30GB version or I need to purchase 80GB back for more room?

On the contrary, stick with the 30GB backplate. With the 80GB backplate you'd need filling to prevent it from shifting out of the adapter.

That $95 and trouble-free 240GB HDD still weighs heavily in my mind.
 
As far as I know Imod was the only one who has successfully installed a Super Talent FZM56GW18P 256GB ZIF SSD in his ipod 5g with Rockbox running. But that drive is sold for $375 from eBay.

I also lean toward a 240GB HDD. I do not like the hiss from stock headphone jack of my CF mod 5.5gen, so much so that I do not want to buy a bigger SSD for it. I know a LOD to an external amp may kill the noise, but I do not want to carry that many gears when I am walking around. I am hoping a pair of Hifiman RE-262s will kill the hiss.
 
Ideally, I want a rockboxed iPod with 240 GB flash memory and a headphone jack that does not hiss with BA IEMs. This would be possible, assuming that a 240GB mSATA SSD is not a lot larger than a CF card; that way an internal cap mod is possible, and we may even put a 2nd internal amp to bypass the stock headphone amp. A smart guy at the DIYMod thread already put a Fiio E5 (E5's PCB to be exact) into his DIYMod, so no external LOD or amp is needed (see page 171 and post #2552):

I am using EX1000 & IE80 (mostly the EX1000), and I don't notice any hiss from the sound directly out of the stock headphone jack. I am perfectly happy (maybe addicted to) with the sound and not a fan of anything extra externally attached to the ipod. That DIYMod thing is too much for me to do it myself without breaking the parts. I am wondering whether that smart guy is willing to do it for a fee.
 
I will definitely try the 256GB Crucial M4 mSATA if Rockbox is confirmed working on the 128GB model. J&R offers me $195 with free shipping for the 256GB and accepts return within 30 days no questions asked. So there is nothing to lose.
 
EDIT:  Are you saying the hiss is caused by the CF mod (no hiss with the HDD)?

Yeah it seems the CF cards are more rockbox friendly, but the CF cards are limited by the 128GB ( I am not aware of any 256GB CF cards). Also the brand name CF cards are very expensive.
 
I am looking at 256GB mSATA option and will give it a try as soon as DockEllis confirms if the RB works on his 128GB.

CF mod does not cause hiss. It may be because my earphones/ears/music are more sensitive to hiss than yours. With BA IEMs (my IEMs' sensitivity is > 120db/mw) and quiet classical music, hiss is more apparent than dynamic earphones with loud rock music. The hiss is not terrible, but definitely more than Sansa Clip+ or iPhone 3GS, both of which have zero hiss.

That is a mSATA drive with LIF connector.
 
You need a PATA drive with ZIF connector.
 
There may be an adaptor, but it will require more space in your iPod.

Correct...unfortunately. The toshiba 240GB hard drive works fine, although you have to swap out the back of the iPod.
I, personally, have tried Two different ZIF SSDs and the Toshiba HDD and only the latter worked.

I think that hiss has something to do with your phones or recorded music. I listen to lots of classical music and sometimes I hear hiss only from the recording. No hiss from my phones or the iPod. I do notice EQ's also cause hiss with my Cowon J3.
