Official Ipod Video / Classic 5g+5.5g+6g+6.5g+7g SSD Mod thread
Nov 25, 2012 at 10:47 PM Post #541 of 10,664
I've gone through this thread a couple of times and I'm finding myself getting confused with all the different gens and HDD/SDD's being discussed.

I own a 6th gen iPod Classic could somebody please throw up a linky to a 160 GB, or bigger, HDD or SSD that has been verified to work on a 6th gen iPod as well as whatever connector I might need to hook the drive up to. I'd prefer a SSD but if there isn't one out there that has been verified to work I'll take the HDD.

It's not 160 GB but I should be able to live comfortably with THIS 128 GB SSD. Would I need any type of special connector to make it shake hands with the iPod motherboard?

It shouldn't be.. You are bottlenecked by USB bandwidth not hard drive speed when you are copying files to the IPod.

the drives in the videos are very much out dated.
my 80gb 5.5g gives me about 7-11mb/sec when copying files on to the hdd

on the otherhand, the writes speeds of an ssd should give you about 15-30mb/sec.

i haven't looked at the newer 120gb and 240gb drives but they should be good for 20-30mb/sec transfer rates

the usb 2.0 spec caps out at about 50mb/sec.

only modern 2.5" notebook drives or better will be limited by the usb bus speed, not our older 1.8" pata drives.

If your 6th generation is the slim one you are drive with that drive, only the fat 160 gb iPod is picky about the drives it takes.

Spoke to Tarkan today...he informed me that the SD card solution hasn't worked for him at all yet. Have any of you guys tried it?

My road to CF mod my ipod 5.5gen is bumpy.. first I got a 64gb flash from some unknown brand and that along was not working, then now I got a 64gb SDXC from Sandisk, putting it in an SDXC to CF adapter, then to a CF to ZIF adapter similar to this one.

When the ipod is connected to the computer, it loaded and iTunes could recognize it, but any operations (putting files in it/ formatting/ iTunes restoring) would only run for around 3 seconds before everything freezes, clearly hardware I/O related.

CF Type I/ II is not a problem, SDXC/HC conversion is not a problem, and the SD works on its own. I'm on the verge of dropping more dough on the ridiculously priced iflash adapter or another motherboard... and I don't even know if that would work:/

My primary 5.5 already has an iflash that I'm upgrading from 32 to 128gb. My new project ...I said ***** it...and got another iflash to use on it and a new battery.

I am going to do the DIY iMod.

I find it ridiculous what they charge to solder/desolder a few points!

I just got an Ipod Video (5.5g) 80GB. Bought it because of the Wolfson DAC, and its gonna run on rockbox anyway, so I don't care that much about the older Ipod Firmware.

Now my questions are:

- Can I upgrade my Ipod to a 240GB Hdd (not SSD, too expensive) and which of HDD would you choose (Toshiba?!?)
- Can I still use Rockbox if I install a 240GB Hdd in it?

I have the exact same set-up you mention above, it works perfectly. The 5.5g 80GB iPod works great with the 240GB Hdd and Rockbox.
