Let me get this straight... The iPod Photo (4th gen color) will take a 256GB card? Does it see the entire capacity? Any idea if it is all usable?

4th gen owners want to know!

As for the Tarkan adapter, IO'm pretty sure it is Type II.

John

Yeah its type II (thick).  I can't be the only one wishing some Chinese manufacturer would come up with a type I adapter that can take more than 128gb (I've tried a couple that claimed they could, and of course they couldn't).  How hard can it be to do that, though?  It would of course allow the big-battery to be used with it.

Surely we are all waiting for two things - the 512gb sdxc cards to come down hugely in price and that chimerical high-capacity type I cf/sdxc adaptor?

That's what I thought.  Though what _is_ the difference between 5G and 5.5G apart from (a) the presence of a 'search' function, and (b) the 5.5G using a stupid non-standard disk format?

functionally, i think only the fact that the 5.5G has a better, brighter display... http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ipod/ipod-faq/difference-between-5th-generation-ipod-and-enhanced-5th-generation-ipod.html

I thought I read somewhere that the brighter display was just a software thing and so the 5G got it as well when the firmware was updated?  Replacement screens don't seem to differentiate between 5G and 5.5G.

  1.
  2. Noodles5666: Do you have a  512GB SDXC card? I'd like to hear test results with:
  3. - iPod Photo, non-Tarkan adaptor (if you have one)
  4. - 5th gen Video, Tarkan SD-CF adaptor
  5. - 5.5 gen Video, Tarkan SD-CF adaptor
  6. - PQI Air Card with SD F to microSD M adaptor (though I guess you don't have this)

I'm in Taiwan, still waiting for my Tarkan adaptors to ship (after 1 month!). I tested a Transcend 256GB SDXC last night. The iPod Photo accepts it, but the PQI Air Card doesn't. So my WiPod is only half-functional. Thankfully the man in the store let me test the card before I bought it!

Oh, and are the Tarkan SD-CF adaptors type II or type I, do you know?

Peter

I'd quite like to know about the 512 gb in a 5th gen ipod as well.  Fell foul of the msata heat issue at work today.  I'd paused it instead of switching it off due to having a meeting, went back to it and it was fairly warm to the touch and the battery nearly gone!   Good job I had my Clip plus as backup (main reason I keep it in the bag really!).

Hey @ all,

I have a slight problem.
during disassembly of my ipod 5.5gen at work and taking it back home, I seemed to have lost the clickwheel........Darn.

My question to all you experienced modders, is it possible to use a 5gen clickwheel on the 5.5gen 64mb board?

Bye,
JULIA

pretty sure the 5G got the brightness controls via a firmware update, but only the 5.5G has the improved, brighter LCD. not sure about the replacement screens, but i understand your point.

my understanding is that both 30GB 5G AND 5.5G Video have only 32MB RAM... higher capacity (sizes greater than base 30GB) 5G and 5.5G have 64MB RAM.

I'm pretty sure this is incorrect.  The 5th Gen came in 30 and 60 GB sizes which both use the 820-1763-A logic board (32MB) which uses 512-byte sectors. The 5.5 Gen came in 30 and 80 GB sizes which both use the 820-1975-A logic board (64MB) which uses 2048-byte sectors.

There is no noticeable difference between the two in Rockbox.  I recommend going for the 5th gen over the 5.5 gen if you intend to use an mSATA drive, as it allows you to connect the drive directly to the motherboard for copying files much faster. The 2048-byte sector partitions created by the 5.5 gen aren't readable outside of the iPod.

I would vote 'yes'.  I've swapped clickwheels around without paying attention to whether they were 5 or 5.5g, and it didn't seem to make any difference at all (obviously 5/5.5 are not interchangeable with 6/7/7.5)

But I could be contradicted!

however, there is ALSO a 820-1975-A logic board (32MB)... this confuses me, and i would love to have a canonical answer to the question!

High Capacity 1900mAh Ebay 5th gen Bigger Battery Test:

There were a few posts earlier about the larger batteries for the 5th gen.

I just finished testing the 1900mAh 5g $26.00 fat case ebay version.

It ran for 70hrs on medium using the 1 song playlist method on my 256gb SDXC.

YMMV
