if your budget is limited, Shanling M3 and Hidizs AP100 are one of the best choices. Hidizs have a little too much bass for me, but besides that, is also interesting option (but without all M3 connectivity options).

Then wouldn't waiting for fiio x3 II be more viable for you given it should be around 200 bucks?

Nah, don't know - I'm extra patient. Just asking as the new fiio will be cheaper than the m3 and hardware-wise will be a better deal given you're worried about the pricing.

Had a look at the x3 ii post, if I can wait until march it may be a consideration. Think my budget is gonna be around $300ish. I expect once I've settled on something and bought it, the next best thing will come out! Always the way!!!

Just my opinion: I wouldn't pay more for DX90. iBasso's DAP is smaller, have better UI and controls, but for me, it's sound is too dull. It's really "correct" in most aspects, but for my taste it's boring.

with HO I almost agree , but with LO into a good amp it gets much better, dependent on the amp of course, I use mine with a Lehmann Traveller.

Almost any DAP benefits from good amp, connected to it But when budget is limited, amp isn't an option.
