When it comes to subs, go big or go home! But seriously it is better to get too much and turn down the gain a bit than not get enough to fill your room properly. I would also strongly recommend some kind of room calibration device if you haven't got one already, they make such a massive difference and in all good ways from my experience.

That is a good start but something like the Minidsp DDRC-22D does so much more than just frequency response and things that you just can't do manually.

I naturally would like to stay highly portable, but the planar IEMs
I have seen are pretty large.

It's a bit of a technology limitation at the moment, planar needs surface area, given the size of IEMs it's hard to make anything sound good at that size and the power requirements make it even less attractive. I talked to the guys at Audeze when they first introduced their in ear planars, they tried to make them smaller but it wasn't technologically feasible at the time. Maybe a few years down the road, with advancements in material technology, we could get something small enough and efficient enough to use in a CIEM application.

I've read the reviews on two out of the three, they're decent, but the reviewers did note that they aren't quite TOTL level worthy. Maybe that's where the focus is at the moment, or there are other reasons why they can't make them compete at that level.
