I've been listening to my K10s out of the balanced output on my Onkyo DP-X1 for the past few weeks. This DAP is the real deal. The K10s are sublime and really sing when driven balanced. The SE output is also fantastic, but if you have DP-X1 you should do yourself the service of driving them balanced. In that time, I've taken the whole setup (K10 + DP-X1) on two cross-country flights and rediscovered new details in music I've been listening to for years. But seriously, the K10 was meant to be driven in balanced mode. The other people aren't lying when they describe how fantastic the K10 sounds out of a balanced setup. This IEM scales so phenomenally well!
I actually modified my Noble cable, rather than buying a new, dedicated balanced cable. Since the cable is 4 wires to the plug, I lobbed off the 3.5mm TRS connector and fitted a 2.5mm TRRS connector ($5). I then added a 2.5mm TRRS female connector ($2) to the plug-end of my existing 3.5mm plug (I cut the cable about 2 inches from the plug for this very reason). This way, I can use the cable in fully balanced mode with my DP-X1, but I can still run it single-ended if I want to plug into another source (via my short little adapter cable).
If you have any soldering skill whatsoever, it's a very easy mod. It took me about 10 minutes total to splice adapters on both ends of my cut cable. Of course, you need to have a multimeter, soldering iron, and connector plugs on hand...
I'm looking forward to get my MD N6 in. I can't wait to see how it sounds balanced out of the DP-X1. Should be fantastic, as well!
