Hi all!
I've been lurking around this forum for a few years, but I finally created an account today. Hurray!
I've got a question regarding the old acrylic universal K10 and it's newer, red aluminium-shelled remake. Thing is, I've owned the old acrylic K10U for a few years and recently I'm itching for an upgrade (or change).
When I went to a local store (I live in Singapore btw) yesterday, I was recommended to try the aluminium K10U by the friendly staff. I knew I wouldn't need to, 'cos I already have the K10. However, out of courtesy, I listened to the aluminium-shelled stunner.
And guess what? The red aluminium K10 sounds somewhat different from my trusty acrylic K10, with more energetic and clearer treble and (perhaps consequentially?) wider sound stage. Also, the overall loudness (or sensitivity, since now I'm a Head-fi member and have to start using the jargons LOL) seem to be increased in the newer model.
I'm confused, and can't seem to find any sources online that reviews the sonic difference between the acrylic and the aluminium versions. Also, I noticed some metallic fittings around the lumens of all 3 bores. Can someone enlighten me please? Is the sonic difference due to a redesign of some sort in the red aluminium model, or is it due to the aluminium shell? Otherwise, is it just my acrylic K10U becoming old?
For the record, I use Onkyo DP-X1, and the comparison was done using the stock Noble cables.
Cheers
Jeff
