New Ultrasone Edition 15
Jan 26, 2018 at 1:35 PM Post #61 of 174
I just had the chance to listened to the Edition 15 at Headfi HQ yesterday afternoon. My experience with Ultrasone is limited to the Edition 9 ( used to own them), Edition 10 ( tried to liked them twice!), Edition 8 (listened to them at a friend's house), Edition 5 Unlimited (listened to them at RMAF 2016), Edition 25 Jubilee (Listened to them at RMAF 2016), Edition 8EX (own them), Edition 7 Tribute (Listened to them yesterday too) and Edition 15. Out of all these the top two form me are the Edition 25 Jubilee and Edition 15 with the Edition 8EX following close.

To me the Edition 25 Jubilee is not at the top (and drops to 3rd position) due to its price/performance ratio. At $6,000 to me is too much for what it offers. if it was priced around the $4,000 range it would be more competitive. The Edition 7 Tribute sounds basically very similar to the Edition 9 I used to own and with the same comfort issues I had with them that force me to sell them.

The tone is similar to the Edition 8EX but it is smoother and with a much wider soundstage. The bass is really nice for an open design. It is light and very comfortable. Actually more comfortable than the Edition 8EX since the cups have a different shape and slightly larger. Because of this I would put the Edition 15 at the top as the best Ultrasone headphones I have heard based on my taste of sound.

I liked them so much that I already put my name down in the list for when they become available here in the States.

Thank you for your report. A question, when money were not important, how does 25 and 15 compare?

IMO if you want them for mainly Classical music I would probably go with the 25 but if you look for a all rounder then I think the 15 would be better.
Now, by looks I prefer the 25. They 15 is nice looking too but the 25 just looks regal to me.

I'm wondering if I should sell my Edition 5 Limited to fund the Edition 15 as the new GTC driver appears to represent a significant underlying technological advancement. However this article in ProAudio has somewhat curbed my enthusiasm for the Edition 15 by highlighting that the Edition 15 is just the first of a product line refresh to feature the new gold titanium driver. It's a bit hard to stomach the premium for pure cosmetic reasons. The Edition 5 Limited used a particular type of wood that justified the premium from a cosmetic as well as partially sonic perspective but I find the premium still a little too rich for the degree of difference it would have made.

I would not recommend you to make your decision based on your own experience and not in anybody else opinion. You should try to listen to the Edition 15 to make your decision.

Makes sense. Hope Ultrasone is at the Singapore CanJam with the Edition 15 in March. I got lucky with the ED5 in buying it without an audition. The ED10 was an expensive mistake.
I agree. I loved the looks and comfort of the Edition 10 and tired to force myself to like the sound (twice) but just couldn’t.

I just placed my order with Moon Audio. They are getting 11 so now just 10 available!
Since I listened to the Edition 15 at HeadFi HQ I knew I wanted a pair for my collection. I have been waiting for these since my disappointment with the Edition 10.

I will post pictures next week after I receive them.
