  Set it to stereo.

I would think that the receiver, or pre/pro will down mix to stereo at the headphone jack regardless of what settings you use.
One would have to read the manual for the unit to verify that, of course..

MarcelE, have you tried it both ways? Do you hear any difference?

if you are using a dac/amp which has a stereo remix set on by default then yes, if no then it doesn't down mix when being used right of a computer source > dac/amp. the only thing you'll get is the 2 front channels when you set it to 5.1 everything else is lost.

I'll have to check the manual of the receiver but I just did a test and there is a slight difference between the settings.
With 5.1 it sounds more spacious (I guess that what I would suspect) but also the voices sound as if it's 'lifted'.
Can't explain exactly, like speakers that are out of phase. With stereo it's sound more direct, imo better.
But I was just not sure if you should leave it on 5.1 or stereo with headphones (the X1 in this case).

Anyone familiar with any other headphones that is comparable to the sound signature of the X1's...closed or open-back?

It doesn't look like I ever got an answer to this but would appreciate those that really like their X1's, have you found a closed back with a similar sound? Bought the Denon AH-D600 on a whim the other day and that didn't work out too well. It seems like everything points to the HiFiMan or the Fostex T-600/900 for closed back.

The VModa M100 is closest. They're honestly not that far apart, just the X1 has the bigger soundstage thanks to being open-back. If you like one, you'll like the other.

My Shurrr 1540 sounds a lot like my X1

This is probably the closest you'll find, yeah. The VModa M100 is also fairly similar, though the M100 has more bass extension and a bit sparklier highs at the expense of soundstage (plus looks way nicer and is exceptionally portable). So that'd be my vote if you plan on going that route.

I've been going through ALOT of headphones lately. Recently purchased some Sennheiser HD600's but the clamp force, depth of earpads resting on my ears, and soundstage kill it for me. However, I do LOVE the mid range vocal reproduction of the HD600's. Are these X1's similar in sound? Lifelike with body and clarity such as the 600's? I'm be using these mainly for vocal playback like podcasts, youtube videos, and then gaming everyday. I've tried so many already and spend $750 on HD700's and am completely disappointed. Had to return those but they were soooooo comfortable.

The X1 is a bassy headphone, but it's very linear. It doesn't have that midrange dip that you normally see, so there is a lot of body and presence to them. The soundstage is pretty damn big, and they aren't muffled or muddy in the least, though I wouldn't call them champions of clarity.

I use them for gaming and they're just awesome for it. They're going to be warmer than the HD600 but I heavily doubt it'll be to an extent that'll be a problem. Unless you're concerned about price, I'd probably bounce up to the X2 just for the replaceable pads and the improved cable/headband, but they apparently sound almost identical except for fairly minuscule differences.

Haven`t had HD600 but based on what I have read they don`t seem to be warmer than HD600. Maybe because stock cable issue and no amping?
