Hello Head-Fi. I'm new to the community but have spent some time on Overclock.net. I'm in need of some wisdom on what to get. I have a budget of $600 (more or less. It's negotiable. I may push it up to $800 if I really must) for my whole setup. I listed to a wide range of music, from classic to rock along with Vocaloid music. I watch some movies (not very often. If I do, I have to watch it with my family on the TV. Just go with the fact that I don't watch movies) and I do some light gaming (really only Dirt 3. I'm thinking about getting into FPS by trying BF3). I'm looking for some good headphones and a DAC and amp. Thanks.

Matrix Cube which is a DAC + amp combo would be a
good start.

or a Nuforce Icon (DAC + amp)

That leaves you with about $400 to spend on
headphones. So many to choose from considering
your musical preferences - here's a few

* Shure 840 or 940 (closed cup)
* Audio Technica AD-2000 (open cup)
* AKG K701 / K702 / K601 (open cup)
* Sennheiser HD 600(open cup)
* Grado 225i/325i (open cup)
* Denon D2000 (closed cup)

Is the TubeMagic D1 good?

The 650's are at $360 on amazon right now. Great deal.

I heard the HD-650's are great headphones. The Q701's seem to perform on par with the K702's. The D2000's don't seem so good for the price but that's just what I think. I will look at the other ones. Thanks.

Heya,

$600 budget:

HRT Music Streamer II (DAC) -> Digizoid ZO revision 2 (comes out next month, AMP situated as PREAMP) -> FiiO E9 (AMP) -> AKG Q701 (Headphone)

Drop the DAC in the setup if you're ok to just use your sound card which I assume you have a decent one and not using onboard. If using onboard, a simple DAC would be the Fiio D3 for optical/spdiff which is inexpensive but very good.

Very best,

Have not heard the Maverick D1 but it looks like a start.

Best of luck and trust your ears.

Very best,

I don't have a computer yet. I will be building one this fall. I heard the Cambridge Audio DACMagic is good as well.
