Hmm, my biggest issue, is that while I like the vocal range brought to light by the 400i's mids, the instuments are veiled in the background to me, and the instruments need to be clear and in line with the vocals for me, as I listen to strictly rock and metal. I know many prefer mids as the center of attention, but more intricate metal sounds very cloudy and muffled when certain parts are veiled.
I am thinking of trying the HE-400s. If I like them better, good on me, I saved $200 and I'll enjoy them. If they're worse, I can go back to the He-400i's if I so choose too. This all depends if Hifiman Support will agree to refund me for the HE-400i's... They're less than a month old, and sold directly thorugh support. 7 days since their last response to me, and I've sent 3 emails in that timespan. Hmm, they're sick of me.

I also listen strictly to rock and metal, and i was thinking the 400i would be great for me. Please share us your impressions when you try the 400s.
Apart from the above, what other headphones (if any) you auditioned (or heard impressions about) and found them good for rock and metal in the price range of the 400i?
a question that might make my wallet really cry: in case you auditioned the he560, how good are they for rock and metal?

All metalheads should definitely check out this thread. HE-560 included. AKG K712 (and probably K7XX) are really strong competitors for HE-400S.

Agreed.
I still preferred the 560 bass to the 400i. IMO it is deeper and more articulate and superior overall. Hence why I am very curious about the 400S overall and where it lies. If it is really very close to 400i then I'll pass... If it is closer to the 560 with some other traits... Then it can be interesting

First bold...I agree on this point.

Second bold...it's not.

These are my opinions have owned all these and with the 400s in house now.

So what's the difference from HE400i? Have you owned the HE400? How's the HE400S compared to HE400?

Search for my earlier comments. In short:

the 400s is very similar to the 400i with some very slights sonic variations. The biggest difference is in the materials used. The 400s sounds nothing like the 400 original. The 400i sounds nothing like the original but similar to the he500 with the he500 still the better performer.

I can't speak for the i or s but the original 400 is very good for metal (as aa self professed metal head) . The he560 is the better all rounderrounder.

If you REALLY like the DT990, try the original HE-400. It isn't the best built, or most comfortable (view some mods, many put Sennheiser-style headband foam in its headband)

Give them a try, they're only $289 now, and you will not be disappointed. I'm even considering returning my HE-400i and returning to the original HE-400. Nothing I've ever heard sounds like it.

After reading for days (in fact it's probably weeks) and your comments I went for the HE-400 as well.
Brand new, on stock (somewhere in Europe), same price as the 400s and probably delivered by the half/end of the week.
Can't compare them with the 400s as I didn't buy them. Can compare them with the Fidelio X1 though, but
I will take that somewhere else as this is probably the wrong place to write about it.

Some conflicting impressions on the 400S sound signature... I look forward to more comparisons & impressions :)

Yeah, impressions are all over the place, but I have complete trust in Matt's impressions, so I'll take his word as gospel.
